The pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom following a security operation.

The development was announced on Friday by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a post on his official X account.

"Finally, all the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Oriire, Oyo have been rescued by our security agencies," Onanuga wrote.

He also shared a video in which one of the rescued victims, Rachael Alamu, Principal of Community High School, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and the security agencies for securing their release.

"President sir, our father, we are grateful. We understand your commitment to our safety and we appreciate all you did for us. Every security operative tried so much and that is why we are still alive today. God bless you," she said in the video.

The rescue followed coordinated security operations involving federal security agencies, according to information released by the Presidency.

The victims were abducted earlier in the week in a high-profile attack that drew nationwide concern and prompted intensified rescue efforts by security operatives.

The successful operation comes days after authorities confirmed the arrest of several suspected kidnappers while others were reportedly killed during the operation.

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to tackling insecurity and ensuring the safety of citizens across the country.

If someone asked me where Nigeria truly lives, I probably would not point to Abuja. I would point to Sabon Gari, Kano. Not because it is the biggest district in Kano. Not because it is the richest. But because every single day, without speeches or national conferences, it quietly demonstrates something many politicians still struggle to understand: that people of different tribes, languages, cultures and faiths can live together, trade together, celebrate together, disagree with one another, and yet still call the same place home. That, to me, is the Nigeria we all dream about. 

Sadly, for many years, too many politicians saw Sabon Gari merely as an electoral destination rather than a governance priority. They remembered it during campaigns, counted its votes after elections, and then returned to the familiar comfort of their traditional political constituencies. Perhaps that was the greatest political blind spot, because Sabon Gari has never been just another part of Kano. 

It is the commercial heartbeat of thousands of Nigerians who have chosen Kano as home. It is where businesses owned by people from virtually every region of the country contribute daily to the economy of Kano State. It is where children born to parents from different parts of Nigeria grow up speaking Hausa as fluently as their native languages. It is where cultures meet not in theory but in everyday life. In many ways, Sabon Gari has quietly become the meeting point of Nigeria in Kano. 

Over the years, there were signs that government was beginning to pay greater attention to this reality. The administration of H.E Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje expanded engagement with inter-tribe communities in ways that suggested a growing appreciation of their place in Kano's social and economic life. What appears different today under H.E Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, however, is the growing impression that these communities are increasingly seen not merely as groups to be consulted during elections but as genuine partners in the future of Kano State. Whether through dialogue, inclusion, or the willingness to build stronger relationships across community lines, there seems to be a conscious effort to widen the circle of belonging. 

History will ultimately judge every administration by how broadly it defined the meaning of "our people." Some leaders naturally governed through familiar political constituencies. Others gradually expanded that circle. The encouraging signs emerging today suggest that Governor Abba understands that Kano's strength lies not only in those who are indigenous to the state but also in the many Nigerians who have invested their lives, businesses, families, and futures here. 

A government truly begins to understand Kano the day it stops seeing Sabon Gari as a destination and starts seeing it as a bridge. A bridge between North and South. A bridge between Christians and Muslims. A bridge between cultures and traditions. A bridge between those whose ancestors were born in Kano and those who chose Kano as home. 

For years, many of us within the Inter-tribe Community Support Forum have consistently argued that inter-tribe communities should not merely be tolerated; they should be recognized as strategic partners in peacebuilding, economic development, and democratic participation. Inclusion is not an act of charity. It is an investment in stability. 

Today, Sabon Gari is no longer simply a district. It is gradually becoming a symbol of what Nigeria can become when leadership chooses unity over division and collaboration over suspicion. This is why I believe the conversation should go beyond Governor Abba or any political party. Leaders will come and go. Political parties will rise and fall. But the lesson will remain. Communities flourish when every resident, regardless of tribe or religion, feels a genuine sense of belonging. 

Perhaps this is the lesson Governor Abba appears to understand. If sustained, it may become one of the defining legacies of his administration not merely because it strengthened relationships between government and inter-tribe communities, but because it quietly reminded Kano that unity is not built through political campaign slogans at electioneering periods. It is built through consistent inclusion. 

If Nigeria is ever going to become the nation we all desire, the journey may not begin in another constitutional conference or another political coalition. It may begin in places like Sabon Gari, where diversity is not debated but lived every single day. Leaders who understand this are doing more than governing a state. 

They are quietly building a nation.

The Institute of Continuing Education (ICE), Northwest University Kano, has commenced the online sale of application forms for admission into its part-time degree programmes for the 2026/2027 academic session.

According to an admission notice released by the institution, the application process began on Monday, July 6, 2026, and will run until August 30, 2026. The exercise covers admission into 100 Level and 200 Level (Direct Entry) programmes.

Prospective applicants are expected to complete their applications online through the university's official website.

The university listed the available programmes to include B.A. International Studies, B.A. Islamic Studies, B.Sc. Economics, B.Sc. Accounting, B.Sc. (Ed) Biology, B.Sc. (Ed) Chemistry, B.Sc. Computer Science, and B.Sc. Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

Northwest University stated that all courses will be offered on a part-time basis. It advised candidates to ensure they meet the admission requirements for their chosen programmes before applying.

The institution also noted that applicants must possess at least five O'Level credit passes, including English Language and Mathematics, while Direct Entry candidates are required to have NCE, IJMB (minimum of nine points), or a National Diploma (Lower Credit) in addition to the O'Level requirements.

Former presidential aide and Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has claimed that he facilitated 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi's first meeting with a British Prime Minister.

Omokri made the assertion while responding to a social media user, Jane, who questioned the authenticity of a photograph he shared online, suggesting it was generated using artificial intelligence.

In a detailed response, Omokri denied the allegation, explaining that the image was taken at Madame Tussauds in London during a visit with his daughter. He said the photograph was captured by the museum's professional photographer after a staff member assisted with the pose.

Addressing comments about class and public image, Omokri highlighted his family's historical background and listed several world leaders he said he had met over the years.

According to him, he had been received by two consecutive British Prime Ministers, Theresa May and Boris Johnson, and claimed he invited Peter Obi to one of those meetings.

"I have also been received in audience by two consecutive British Prime Ministers, first Theresa May and then Boris Johnson, of which I invited Mr Peter Obi to join me, and that was the first time he met someone at that level," Omokri said.

He further stated that he had also been received by former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar and other world leaders, adding that photographs of those meetings are publicly available.

Omokri maintained that he does not use artificial intelligence to write or generate images, insisting that he prefers original work and authentic photographs.

Musa Abdullahi Sufi has questioned what he described as the disproportionate media attention on Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), Kano, following the recent sexual harassment allegations involving a visiting lecturer associated with the institution.

In a commentary titled "Is There a Coordinated Attempt to Tarnish MAAUN Nigeria's Reputation?", Sufi argued that while the allegations deserve thorough investigation, public discourse should remain guided by fairness, evidence and due process.

According to Sufi, the lecturer at the centre of the controversy is reportedly a visiting academic with affiliations to other universities and not a permanent staff member of MAAUN. He also noted reports suggesting that aspects of the alleged incident involving the student and her family occurred outside the university's campus.

He questioned why media reports had largely placed MAAUN at the centre of the controversy despite the lecturer's reported affiliations elsewhere, asking whether the university had been given the opportunity to activate its internal investigation and disciplinary procedures before the matter gained widespread public attention.

Sufi further highlighted MAAUN's publicly declared zero-tolerance stance on sexual harassment, describing the institution as one of the few private universities in Nigeria to institutionalise a comprehensive anti-harassment policy.

He referenced the university's standing pledge, announced by its Founder and President, Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, that any student who presents credible evidence exposing sexual harassment involving any lecturer, staff member or even the founder himself would receive a ₦5 million reward.

According to Sufi, the policy reflects the institution's commitment to encouraging victims to report misconduct without fear while promoting accountability at every level.

While maintaining that anyone found guilty of sexual harassment should face the full weight of the law, Sufi stressed that justice should be based on verified evidence and due process rather than assumptions or sensational headlines.

He also urged the public to avoid condemning institutions or individuals before investigations are concluded, noting that accountability must be balanced with fairness.

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Policy Communications, Daniel Bwala, has said that many Nigerians who relocated overseas in search of greener pastures are facing harsh economic realities, despite earning salaries in foreign currencies.

Speaking during an appearance on The Morayo Show, Bwala argued that the expectations of many Nigerians who migrated, particularly to the United Kingdom, differ significantly from the reality they now face.

According to him, many degree holders are employed in jobs unrelated to their academic qualifications, including positions in care homes and warehouses.

Bwala maintained that some Nigerians who believe they are struggling at home may actually be in a better position than friends and relatives who left the country years ago.

He described the experience of many migrants as resembling "modern-day slavery," explaining that although some workers earn between £2,600 and £2,800 monthly, the high cost of living significantly reduces what they are left with after paying for rent, transportation, utilities, internet services and food.

According to him, the financial pressure forces many Nigerians abroad to take up two or three jobs just to meet their daily needs.

Bwala also argued that Nigerians earning modest incomes at home may benefit from stronger family and community support systems, unlike many migrants who have no one to rely on in difficult times.

He specifically noted that someone earning ₦60,000 in Nigeria could still receive assistance from relatives and friends when necessary, while many Nigerians living abroad often have to shoulder their burdens alone.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has warned that it will sanction individuals, businesses and financial institutions that refuse to accept the standard ₦100 banknote, reaffirming that both the regular and commemorative versions of the note remain legal tender across the country.

The apex bank issued the warning on Wednesday following reports that some traders and business operators had rejected the standard ₦100 note, claiming it was no longer valid for transactions.

In a statement signed by its Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi Ali, the CBN described the practice as unlawful, stressing that rejecting any duly issued banknote undermines public confidence in the nation's currency and violates the provisions of the CBN Act.

According to the bank, the commemorative ₦100 note introduced to mark Nigeria's centenary was designed to circulate alongside the existing standard ₦100 note and was never intended to replace it.

The CBN therefore urged Nigerians to continue accepting both versions of the ₦100 note for all transactions nationwide.

The apex bank warned that anyone found rejecting the standard ₦100 banknote would face appropriate enforcement measures in line with the law.

Commemorative note

It reiterated its commitment to protecting the integrity of the naira, maintaining public confidence in all officially issued banknotes and ensuring the smooth circulation of currency across the country.

The CBN also advised members of the public seeking further clarification on the status of any banknote to contact the bank through its official communication channels.

A Chief Magistrates' Court in Katsina has remanded Dr. Bashir Kurfi, a lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, over allegations that he falsely accused the Katsina State Government of sponsoring bandits to perform the Hajj pilgrimage.

Chief Magistrate Zaharaddeen Kofar Soro gave the order after the Katsina State Police Command arraigned the lecturer on charges of alleged defamation of character and injurious falsehood.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), Dr. Kurfi made the allegations during an interview on Trust TV on June 24, 2026, where he reportedly claimed that the Katsina State Government sponsored some bandit leaders to participate in the Hajj exercise.

The police charged the lecturer with two counts under Sections 308 and 309(1) of the Penal Code Law of Katsina State, arguing that the remarks were false, malicious and capable of damaging the reputation of both the state government and its people.

When the charges were read, Dr. Kurfi pleaded not guilty.

Following his plea, the prosecution urged the court to remand the defendant in police custody pending the conclusion of investigations, maintaining that granting him bail at this stage could interfere with the investigation.

Counsel to the defendant, A.D. Umar, opposed the application and asked the court to admit his client to bail, insisting that he was entitled to his liberty while facing trial.

After listening to both parties, the Chief Magistrate ordered that the police continue with their investigation and directed that the defendant remain in police custody until the next hearing.

The matter was adjourned to Monday, July 14, 2026, for continuation of proceedings.

Speaking with journalists after the court session, defence counsel A.D. Umar expressed confidence that his client would ultimately be vindicated.

Dr. Kurfi was subsequently escorted back to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) of the Katsina State Police Command.

The case comes days after the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) arrested suspected bandit leaders returning from the Hajj pilgrimage at the Umaru Musa Yar'Adua Airport in Katsina.

suspected kidnap kingpin, identified as Abubakar Usman, has been arrested following a security operation that led to the rescue of a woman abducted in Delta State after her captors allegedly demanded a ₦100 million ransom.

The development was disclosed by security advocate and founder of SafeCity Security Service, Harrison Gwamnishu, in a statement shared via his official Facebook page.

According to Gwamnishu, the victim, Mrs. Blessing Chiedu, a native of Umunede Kingdom, was abducted on July 2, 2026, along the Ani-Ifekide Farm Road in Ubulu-Uku. Following information about the incident, he said the matter was immediately escalated to the Delta State Police Command's Anti-Kidnapping Squad in Asaba, led by CSP Osakpolor.

He explained that a rescue operation, aided by the SafeCity Hydra Tech Surveillance System, was launched, leading to the successful rescue of the victim along the Ubulu-Unor/Ashama Road. She was rescued alive and unharmed.

Gwamnishu said security operatives immediately launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects, with the operation continuing through the night until about 6:45 a.m. when the surveillance system reportedly traced the gang to a hideout in the Ogwashi-Uku/Adonta Forest.

He stated that a gun battle ensued during the operation, resulting in the arrest of Abubakar Usman, described as one of the most wanted suspects, while other members of the gang reportedly escaped into the forest with their firearm.

According to Gwamnishu, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect and his gang have allegedly been linked to several kidnapping incidents across Igbodo, Umunede and neighbouring communities, where they are accused of collecting millions of naira in ransom from victims' families.

He commended the Delta State Police Command, officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad, members of the Nigeria Forest Security Service, local security volunteers and community leaders for their roles in the operation.

Gwamnishu also expressed appreciation to the Delta State Government for creating what he described as an enabling environment for security agencies to carry out the operation, while reaffirming his commitment to working with security stakeholders to combat kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state.

The Delta State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement on the operation at the time of filing this report.

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, has directed security personnel to immediately engage and neutralise bandits and terrorists once deployed, warning that any operative who delays action while waiting for approval would be treated as a bandit.

Musa gave the directive on Wednesday in Sokoto State during the commissioning of 62 operational vehicles and other security equipment valued at ₦27.1 billion, procured by the Sokoto State Government to strengthen security operations across the state.

Addressing troops at the event, the Defence Minister stressed that soldiers and other security operatives must not hesitate to confront criminal elements whenever they are deployed for operations.

He warned that waiting for further instructions before engaging terrorists or bandits would not be tolerated.

"Once you are deployed, do not wait for any order from anybody to shoot any bandit or any terrorist. I want to make that very loud and clear. Anybody who refuses to shoot or kill any bandit or terrorist in the name of waiting for an order, we will treat you like a bandit," Musa said.

The minister also urged personnel to properly maintain the newly commissioned vehicles and equipment, noting that they were acquired at enormous cost to improve security across the state.

According to him, the resources invested in procuring the equipment could have been channelled to other developmental projects, making it necessary for security agencies to ensure they are effectively utilised and well maintained.

"It is important for those that will handle this equipment. These equipment cost billions of naira that could have been used for other aspects but have been dedicated to this.

"So I want to charge you that you must maintain this equipment very well. We will come after a year to see how these equipment are doing," he added.

Governors from the 19 Northern states and members of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council on Wednesday convened in Kaduna for a high-level meeting aimed at addressing the region's growing security and development challenges, with the proposed creation of state police emerging as a key issue on the agenda.

The meeting, organised under the Northern States Governors' Forum (NSGF), is expected to examine strategies for tackling insecurity, boosting agriculture, addressing underdevelopment and advancing other critical issues affecting Northern Nigeria.

Welcoming participants, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani described the ongoing constitutional process on state police as a significant milestone in Nigeria's democratic journey, stressing that the current security realities demand a policing structure that is more responsive to local communities.

According to him, governors across political parties have consistently advocated for a decentralised policing system capable of confronting the rising threats posed by banditry, terrorism and kidnapping.

Sani argued that establishing state police would strengthen security operations by increasing personnel on the ground and improving response to local security challenges.

The governor also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as the Federal Government's commitment to the development of Northern Nigeria, citing interventions in transportation, agriculture, healthcare, education, infrastructure, energy and national security.

He praised the leadership of the Northern States Governors' Forum under Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, saying the forum has continued to promote regional cooperation beyond political affiliations.

While acknowledging that Nigeria still faces significant challenges, Sani maintained that measurable progress has been made through collaboration between the Federal Government and state governments.

He also applauded the National Assembly for advancing legislative efforts on the proposed state police framework, expressing optimism that the constitutional amendment process would soon be concluded.

According to the governor, the creation of state police has the potential to significantly strengthen Nigeria's security architecture by providing additional manpower to combat criminal groups operating across the region.

Sani further urged Northern leaders to remain united in pursuing practical solutions that will improve security, expand economic opportunities, modernise agriculture, strengthen healthcare and education, and promote inclusive development across the region.

The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has rejected claims by former Borno State governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, that Northern voters would not support the party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the 2027 general election.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Kwankwaso described the assertion as misleading, insisting that Obi commands significant and growing support across Northern Nigeria.

He argued that no individual could claim to speak for the entire North or determine how millions of voters in the region would cast their ballots.

"It is both inaccurate and presumptuous for anyone to claim to speak for the entire North. The people of the region are politically conscious and will vote for the candidate they believe has the capacity, competence and integrity to lead Nigeria. Peter Obi enjoys genuine support across Northern Nigeria, and that support continues to grow," Kwankwaso stated.

The former Kano State governor pointed to the 2023 presidential election, noting that Obi secured about 2.8 million votes across the North, which he said reflected the former Anambra governor's increasing acceptance among Northern voters.

Kwankwaso further argued that the country's current economic challenges and growing public dissatisfaction have strengthened Obi's appeal ahead of the 2027 presidential race.

He also dismissed Sheriff's claim that Kano voters would reject Obi, maintaining that the people of the state have consistently demonstrated political independence by supporting candidates they consider credible, regardless of ethnic or religious background.

According to him, the proposed Obi-Kwankwaso alliance offers Nigerians a viable alternative capable of addressing the country's economic, security and governance challenges.

Kwankwaso urged Sheriff to focus on issues affecting Nigerians, particularly the worsening security and humanitarian situation in the North-East, instead of making what he described as divisive political statements.

Sheriff had earlier stated during a television interview that Northern voters would not back Peter Obi in the 2027 election, arguing that the former Anambra State governor lacked the regional support needed to secure victory.

United States President Donald Trump has declared that the ceasefire between the United States and Iran is effectively over, following a fresh wave of hostilities triggered by Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking on Wednesday during a NATO summit in Turkey, Trump dismissed ongoing diplomatic efforts with Tehran, insisting that he no longer believed negotiations would produce any meaningful outcome.

"As far as I'm concerned, it's over," Trump said when asked about the status of the ceasefire. "It's just a waste of time dealing with them. I'll let our wonderful negotiators keep talking if they want, but I don't see it."

The latest escalation follows attacks on several ships navigating the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's busiest oil shipping routes. Iran has maintained that it intends to regulate passage through the waterway by imposing transit fees and has warned that vessels failing to comply could become targets.

The renewed violence prompted the United States to launch extensive airstrikes on more than 80 Iranian military installations, including coastal radar facilities, air defence systems and Revolutionary Guard naval assets. According to the U.S. Central Command, the operation was aimed at reducing Iran's capacity to threaten international maritime trade.

Iran responded with retaliatory strikes targeting U.S. military facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait, while state media reported multiple explosions in several southern cities, including Qeshm, Sirik, Bandar Abbas and Bushehr, home to the country's only civilian nuclear power plant. Iranian authorities also confirmed the death of a member of the Revolutionary Guards during the attacks.

The renewed conflict has unsettled global energy markets, with international oil prices climbing by about five percent after Trump's remarks and the exchange of military strikes.

Meanwhile, Iran accused Washington of violating the terms of an earlier memorandum of understanding by restoring sanctions on its oil exports and carrying out military operations despite ongoing diplomatic engagements.

According to her, those who venture into business solely for financial gain often lose motivation when challenges arise, whereas genuine passion provides the resilience needed to keep going despite obstacles.

The chef also confirmed that she is developing several new food concepts and customer experiences but chose to keep the details under wraps for now, promising that they would be unveiled at the appropriate time.

Beyond serving meals, Chef Imoni said her greatest aspiration is to create opportunities for others by mentoring, equipping and empowering young people with practical culinary skills that can become sustainable sources of income.

The Senate has called on the Federal Government to discontinue its policy of reintegrating former insurgents into society, insisting instead that those involved in terrorism should be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The lawmakers made the position known during plenary while considering the growing concerns over Nigeria's counter-terrorism strategy. They argued that granting rehabilitation and reintegration to ex-insurgents could undermine justice for victims of terrorism and weaken public confidence in the nation's security efforts.

Several senators maintained that individuals who have participated in terrorist activities should face prosecution rather than being returned to communities through government-backed reintegration programmes. They stressed that accountability remains essential to achieving lasting peace and discouraging future acts of violence.

According to the lawmakers, the continued reintegration of former insurgents has generated widespread public concern, particularly among communities that have suffered attacks and lost loved ones to insurgency. They noted that many Nigerians view the policy as unfair to victims who continue to bear the scars of years of violence.

Legal proceedings over the proposed deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties are set to resume today at the Court of Appeal in Abuja as the affected parties seek to overturn a Federal High Court judgment ordering their removal from the register of political parties.

A three-member panel of the appellate court, headed by Justice Abba Mohammed, is expected to hear the substantive appeals after earlier proceedings allowed all parties to regularise and exchange their court processes.

Besides the ADC, the Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party (AP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) are challenging the lower court's decision, which directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister them for allegedly failing to meet constitutional requirements for continued registration.

The Court of Appeal had earlier granted a stay of execution of the judgment, preventing INEC from enforcing the deregistration pending the determination of the appeals. The appellate court also faulted the trial judge for delivering judgment despite an earlier directive to suspend proceedings in the case.

The suit was instituted by the National Forum of Former Legislators, which argued that the affected political parties failed to achieve the electoral performance benchmarks required under the Constitution and the Electoral Act. The plaintiffs maintained that the parties did not secure the minimum level of electoral success required to retain their legal status.

However, the affected parties, alongside INEC, have urged the appellate court to set aside the judgment, insisting that the decision was legally flawed and should not stand.

Meanwhile, in a related development, the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered ADC National Welfare Secretary, Nkemakolam Ukandu, to pay ₦100 million in damages after striking out his suit against two judges over alleged bias and judicial misconduct. The court awarded ₦50 million each to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, and Justice Peter Lifu, ruling that the case lacked diligent prosecution.

When history finally settles down to tell the story of Kano politics, I do not think it will remember only the roads that were constructed, the schools that were renovated, or the hospitals that were upgraded. Those things matter, and rightly so, but history often looks beyond projects. It searches for defining moments. Moments when perception changed. Moments when a people quietly began to see a leader differently. 

In 2023, one of the most common conversations across Kano was not whether H.E Abba Kabir Yusuf would win the election. It was what kind of governor he would become if he did. Many believed they already knew the answer. To them, he would merely be "Kwankwaso's governor" a successor who would forever live under the shadow of the man who introduced him to power. 

Looking back today, it is impossible to deny the role Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso played in Abba's political journey. Leadership demands honesty, and honesty requires acknowledging history. Without Kwankwaso, there may never have been Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. That is a fact that should neither be rewritten nor diminished. 

But history also teaches another lesson. Every great political mentor eventually reaches a point where the greatest tribute to his own leadership is not how long his followers remain in his shadow, but how confidently they grow into leaders capable of carrying their own responsibilities. 

That, perhaps, is where Kano quietly finds itself today. Whether one supports the New Nigeria People's Party, belongs to another political party, or chooses to remain politically neutral, something appears to have changed. Conversations are gradually shifting. More and more, people seem to be judging Governor Abba on the strength of his own decisions, his policies, and the direction of his administration rather than merely through the lens of those who helped shape his political journey. That change may appear small, but in politics it is profound. 

There comes a point in every administration when a governor can no longer borrow public confidence from the goodwill of another. Citizens begin to judge him by the confidence with which he leads, the decisions he makes, the challenges he confronts, and the legacy he appears determined to leave behind. 

That moment cannot be manufactured by speeches. It cannot be gifted by endorsements. It cannot even be inherited through political structures. It must be earned. 

Perhaps that is why some of the strongest opinions about Governor Abba today are no longer centred on the man who helped him emerge. Instead, they are centred on Abba himself. His supporters defend his record. His critics challenge his decisions. Yet, in both cases, the conversation is increasingly about his leadership. Whether history will ultimately judge those decisions kindly or otherwise remains a matter for time, but the fact that they are increasingly seen as his own is, in itself, a noteworthy political development. Ironically, this is one of the highest compliments any political mentor can receive. 

A teacher succeeds when the student no longer needs to be introduced before entering the room. A father succeeds when the child becomes capable of standing on his own feet. A mentor succeeds when those he nurtured begin to write their own chapters without forgetting where their journey began. 

Leadership is not rebellion against one's political beginnings. Neither is it blind dependence on them. It is the courage to accept the responsibility that comes with office and to allow one's decisions to speak louder than inherited expectations. 

This is why I believe the true conversation about Governor Abba should rise above the usual arguments between supporters and opponents. Politics is temporary, but leadership leaves footprints long after campaign posters have faded. 

One day, H. E Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf will leave office just as others before him have done. When that day comes, history will not ask whose political successor he was. History will ask whether he justified the trust placed in him, whether he gave Kano reasons to hope, and whether he left the state better than he met it. 

Those questions cannot be answered by party slogans. They cannot be answered by social media debates. They can only be answered by time. 

Perhaps that is the most beautiful thing about leadership. It is patient. It allows no one to mark his own examination script. It waits quietly until the years have spoken. 

Perhaps history will not remember this period simply as the years Abba governed as someone's successor. Perhaps it will remember it as the period Kano began judging a governor by the weight of his own decisions rather than by the shoulders upon which he first stood. Leadership, after all, is not measured by who introduced you to power. It is measured by what you do when power finally introduces you to history.

The Kano State Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has ordered the compulsory retirement of a Sharia Court judge over bribery and imposed disciplinary sanctions on several judicial officers and court staff following investigations into allegations of misconduct.

The decisions were reached during the Commission's 90th meeting held on July 3, 2026, after it reviewed reports and recommendations submitted by the Judicial Public Complaints Committee on petitions involving judges and court personnel. The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Monday by the spokesperson for the Kano State Courts, Baba Jibo Ibrahim.

According to the statement, Hon. Judge Aliyu Yahaya Muhammad of the Bebeji Sharia Court was compulsorily retired after investigators established that he received a ₦250,000 bribe in Suit No. CV/474/2024 between Talatu Ibrahim and Muntari Abubakar Baguda. The Commission also directed the judge to refund the entire amount received.

The Commission further suspended the Registrar of the Bebeji Sharia Court, Ibrahim Ahmad Ibrahim, without pay for four months after he admitted receiving part of the bribe.

In a separate case, the JSC approved the compulsory retirement of Muzambilu Ado, Acting Director of Public Relations at the Kano State Sharia Court of Appeal, after investigations uncovered what it described as serious irregularities in his academic credentials, including alteration of educational records and irregular entry into the judicial service.

Also sanctioned was Hon. Judge Usman Haruna Usman of the Goron Dutse Upper Sharia Court, who was demoted by one grade level for negligence after allowing proceeds from the sale of attached property to be paid into the personal account of a court staff member, resulting in the loss of litigants' funds.

The Commission also cautioned Hon. Judge Abdullahi Wayya of the Kasuwa Sharia Court over his handling of bail in Case No. CR/172/2022 involving the Commissioner of Police and Muhammad Musa Kadawa. It found that the judge failed to properly supervise the bail process, leading to the release of the defendant without adequate verification of the property documents presented as bail.

As part of its resolutions, the Commission directed that the case involving Inspector Shehu Adamu be forwarded to the Kano State Police Command for further investigation and possible disciplinary action after he was found to have misled the court by certifying that all bail conditions had been fulfilled. It also ordered a thorough investigation into the roles played by court cashiers Salmanu Zubairu and Ahmad Kabir in processing the bail documents.

Meanwhile, the Commission reversed its earlier suspension of Hon. Judge Umar Sunusi Danbaba following the submission of additional documents by the Judicial Public Complaints Committee. The fresh findings indicated that the committee had not recommended his removal from judicial duties. Consequently, the Commission restored him to office with effect from July 3, 2026, alongside his full salary and benefits.

Reaffirming its commitment to maintaining public confidence in the judiciary, the Commission stressed that it would continue to uphold the highest standards of ethics, professionalism and discipline. It warned that any judicial officer or court employee found guilty of misconduct, corruption or abuse of office would face appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the law.

The Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) has clarified that the controversial Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC) never operated an active account with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), insisting that no government funds or salaries were released to the organisation.

The clarification follows growing public scrutiny over allegations that the purported agency fraudulently secured official recognition and opened government bank accounts using forged documents.

Speaking on the development, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the OAGF, Bawa Mokwa, explained that although an application was made to open a CBN account, the process was never completed because the required documentation to activate the account was not submitted.

According to him, while the Office of the Accountant-General initially authorised the account-opening process based on documents presented by the applicant, the account never became operational because the names of authorised signatories were never provided.

"The account has never seen the light of day. It has not received one kobo because it was never fully operational," Mokwa said, stressing that the absence of an operational account meant there was no avenue through which public funds could have been disbursed to the organisation.

He further dismissed claims that the Federal Government allocated funds or paid salaries to the agency, noting that the PFIPC had neither completed the legal requirements for receiving public funds nor recruited staff through the established procedures for federal agencies.

Mokwa explained that before any government agency can employ workers and place them on the federal payroll, it must first obtain approvals from the Federal Character Commission, the Budget Office and the Federal Civil Service Commission, after which the names of approved staff are forwarded to the OAGF for payment processing. He maintained that none of these procedures had been completed in the case of the PFIPC.

The OAGF's position comes days after the Presidency alleged that Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, who claimed to be Director-General of the PFIPC, fraudulently used forged government documents to facilitate the opening of CBN accounts in the name of the non-existent agency. The Presidency also stated that police investigations found no evidence that government funds were ever transferred into the accounts.

Authorities have since maintained that the PFIPC has no legal backing and that criminal proceedings against Adeyemi and two other suspects are ongoing before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed reports alleging that he was offered ₦500 billion to contest against the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, in a bid to split votes in Nigeria's Southern region ahead of the 2027 general election.

Jonathan's position was made known in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Ikechukwu Eze, who described the report as entirely false, baseless and deliberately fabricated to mislead the public.

According to Eze, the publication, which claimed the former president disclosed being offered the huge sum to undermine Obi's electoral chances, lacked every basic element of credible journalism. He noted that the report failed to state where or when Jonathan allegedly made such a claim, who made the purported offer, or who witnessed the alleged conversation.

The media aide said the report appeared to have been deliberately concocted to drag the former president into needless political controversy and create unnecessary tension ahead of the election season.

Eze urged Nigerians to disregard the publication in its entirety, stressing that Jonathan never made such a statement and was not involved in any arrangement of the nature alleged in the report.

He further advised members of the public to verify sensational political stories before sharing them, warning that the approach of another election cycle often comes with an increase in misinformation, fake news and false attributions aimed at misleading citizens.

The former president's aide reiterated Jonathan's commitment to promoting peace, democracy and national unity, while calling on media organisations and the public to uphold truth, accuracy and responsible journalism in the dissemination of information.

The Palace of HRM Igwe Ikechukwu Oliver Akpudo, Eze Ndi Igbo of Kano, has expressed concern over what it described as prejudicial and defamatory publications currently circulating in relation to the ongoing court proceedings arising from a business dispute involving the monarch and businessman, Maduka Madubuike.

In a statement made available to our correspondent, the Palace said while it respects the right of every citizen to seek legal redress and remains fully committed to the judicial process, allegations contained in court filings should not be presented to the public as established facts before the conclusion of trial.

The Palace noted that HRM Igwe Ikechukwu Oliver Akpudo has pleaded not guilty to the allegations before the court and remains constitutionally entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise by a court of competent jurisdiction.

According to the statement, concern has grown over reports and public commentaries emanating from the dispute and the subsequent proceedings which allegedly seek to prejudice the ongoing judicial process and subject the monarch to public ridicule and reputational harm even before the courts have had the opportunity to determine the issues before them.

The Palace further observed that while the dispute originated from business dealings between parties now before the court, recent reports and headlines had unnecessarily projected the revered institution of Eze Ndi Igbo of Kano into the controversy in a manner it considers damaging and prejudicial.

"The Palace is particularly concerned by publications and commentaries which appear calculated to prejudice ongoing proceedings, subject His Royal Majesty to public ridicule and inflict reputational injury upon both his person and the revered institution of Eze Ndi Igbo of Kano before the conclusion of the judicial process," the statement read.

It urged members of the public to distinguish between allegations contained in court proceedings and findings reached by a court after the conclusion of trial.

The Palace further disclosed that it is reviewing publications and reports presently in circulation concerning the matter and stated that appropriate legal and other lawful actions would be taken where necessary to protect the reputation and rights of the monarch and the institution he represents.

The Palace reiterated confidence in the judicial process and expressed optimism that the courts would arrive at a fair and just determination of the issues before them.

Leaders of the Kano Igbo community in Kano have maintained that the judgment of the Court of Appeal, Kano Division, in Appeal No. CA/KN/64/2020 remains the subsisting judicial pronouncement on the long-running dispute surrounding the Eze Ndi Igbo of Kano stool, pending the final determination of the matter by the Supreme Court of Nigeria. 

The position was contained in a statement made available to journalists in Kano, where the community leaders said recent developments and continued public discussions surrounding the stool had made it necessary to clarify what they described as the prevailing legal position on the matter. 

According to the leaders, the Court of Appeal found that the constitutional procedures prescribed under the Constitution of the Igbo Community Association (ICA) for the emergence, installation and recognition of an Eze Ndi Igbo of Kano were not complied with in the process relied upon by Chief Boniface Ibekwe in asserting entitlement to the stool. 

They stated that the appellate court consequently set aside the judgment and legal foundation upon which those claims had rested and directed that the constitutional procedures governing the emergence of an Eze Ndi Igbo of Kano be complied with in accordance with the provisions of the ICA Constitution. 

The leaders further noted that, as of the date of the statement, no judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria had reversed, varied or set aside the judgment delivered by the Court of Appeal in Appeal No. CA/KN/64/2020. 

They argued that the appellate court's decision therefore remains the subsisting and binding judicial pronouncement on the dispute pending the final determination of the appeal before the apex court. 

According to sited copy of the Certified True Copy of the Appeal Court and the statement, until the Court of Appeal judgment is set aside by the Supreme Court, the process found by the appellate court not to have complied with the constitutional requirements of the ICA cannot serve as the basis for claims of judicial recognition as Eze Ndi Igbo of Kano. 

The leaders urged members of the public, government institutions, traditional rulers, security agencies, corporate organisations and other stakeholders to independently verify representations relating to judicial recognition concerning the office of the Eze Ndi Igbo of Kano against the subsisting judgment of the Court of Appeal. 

They stressed that the clarification relates strictly to the leadership dispute surrounding the stool and should not be construed as commentary on any unrelated civil, commercial or criminal proceedings involving any individual or party. 

Speaking on the present leadership of the community, the leaders stated that HRM Igwe Ikechukwu Oliver Akpudo continues to perform the functions and responsibilities associated with the office of Eze Ndi Igbo of Kano and enjoys broad acceptance and recognition across significant sections of the Kano Igbo community. 

They added that the monarch remains actively involved in community affairs and continues to discharge the traditional, cultural and representative responsibilities associated with the office while the legal process continues before the Supreme Court. 

The leaders expressed confidence that the eventual decision of the Supreme Court would bring finality to the dispute and strengthen unity within the Kano Igbo community
