Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has visited the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, as part of his engagements in Abuja following his victory in the August 15 governorship election.

Adeleke's visit to Wike came shortly after he met with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he presented his certificate of return and expressed appreciation for what he described as the President's commitment to allowing the electoral process to proceed without interference.

A photograph of Adeleke's meeting with Wike was shared on Thursday by Lere Olayinka, the minister's media aide, showing the two politicians exchanging pleasantries while holding the governor's certificate of return.

The meeting with Wike was one of the governor's engagements following his re-election in the Osun governorship poll.

Adeleke, who contested the election on the platform of the Accord Party, was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission after securing 511,067 votes, defeating the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes.

The governor recorded victories in 19 of Osun State's 30 local government areas.

Earlier at the Presidential Villa, Adeleke thanked President Tinubu for what he described as his role in allowing the election to take place freely.

Speaking with State House correspondents after the meeting, Adeleke described Tinubu as the "father of the nation" and said the President deserved commendation for respecting the democratic process.

He said his visit was primarily to express appreciation to the President and reinforce the importance of democratic governance in Nigeria.

Adeleke's series of meetings in Abuja come as he begins preparations for his next term in office following his declaration as winner of the governorship election.

Fresh details have emerged suggesting that no registered political party, including the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), met the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) original July 11 deadline for uploading the names of candidates for the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections.

According to multiple sources within the electoral commission, the July 11 deadline was missed by all political parties before INEC eventually extended the submission period to July 14 following appeals from political stakeholders.

One source familiar with the process disclosed that more than 70 per cent of the APC's candidates had not been uploaded as of the initial deadline, contrary to the party's earlier claim that it had fully complied.

The source further alleged that INEC had to make special administrative adjustments to accommodate the delayed submissions from political parties.

"As of the July 11 deadline, before the extension to July 14, over 70 per cent of APC candidates had not been uploaded. No political party met the deadline. The commission had to bend backwards to accommodate them," the source said.

The revelation appears to contradict a statement issued by the APC on July 12, in which the party announced that it had successfully submitted the names of its candidates before the deadline despite managing what it described as the largest number of candidates among all political parties.

At the time, APC spokesman Felix Morka had argued that INEC only extended the deadline because opposition parties failed to complete their internal nomination processes within the stipulated period.

INEC, however, later confirmed that the extension followed an appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), which requested additional time on behalf of political parties that were unable to complete the upload of candidates' names and personal particulars.

The announcement was contained in a statement by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, who said the extension was made in line with the commission's powers under the revised timetable for the 2027 general election.

Following the extension, the APC criticised opposition parties, accusing them of lacking the organisational capacity required to manage their internal affairs.

The party also described it as ironic that opposition parties, which had previously accused the APC of influencing INEC's decisions, later sought the commission's intervention after failing to meet the deadline.

However, the fresh account from INEC sources suggests the extension was not granted solely because of opposition parties, but because the delay affected virtually all registered political parties, including the APC.

Internal disputes trail APC nomination process

Meanwhile, the ruling party is also facing internal disagreements over its candidate selection process in some parts of the country.

In Benue State, aggrieved APC members and aspirants from the Apa State Constituency staged a protest at the party's national secretariat, alleging attempts to impose a preferred candidate ahead of the primary election.

The protesters called on the APC National Working Committee (NWC) to intervene, insisting that candidates should emerge through transparent and credible primaries rather than what they described as imposition.

One of the protesters, who identified himself simply as Godwin O., alleged that genuine aspirants were being denied a level playing field through plans to issue a "same-day ticket" to a favoured candidate.

According to him, such actions could weaken the party's unity and electoral prospects if left unresolved.

The protesters also criticised a party leader, Sonny Echono, alleging that he had little involvement in grassroots party activities and arguing that candidates should be chosen based on loyalty, service and acceptance among party members.

As of the time of filing this report, the APC leadership had not issued an official response to the allegations, while the claims by the protesters had not been independently verified.

A political group formerly known as the Kwankwasiyya–Shekarau Unity Forum has announced a major rebranding, dropping the Kwankwasiyya identity and adopting the new name "Abba Gida-Gida–Shekarau Unity Forum" as it declared total support for Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The announcement was made on Monday during a solidarity visit by members of the forum to the Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, at his office.

Speaking during the visit, the forum's Chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Saminu (DOC), said the decision marked a new political direction for the group, explaining that members had resolved to identify directly with Governor Yusuf's leadership and development agenda.

According to him, the forum was originally formed after the 2023 merger of APC and PDP political structures to strengthen the Kwankwasiyya movement during the elections.

He recalled that although their political leader, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, later exited the movement, members of the forum remained loyal but were allegedly sidelined despite their contributions.

Saminu, however, credited Commissioner Waiya with reconnecting the group to the state government, saying the renewed relationship inspired members to adopt a new identity centred on Governor Yusuf.

He said the forum's decision was informed by what it described as the administration's achievements in education, healthcare, security, youth and women empowerment, road infrastructure and other development projects, insisting that the governor deserved another term in office.

Receiving the delegation, Commissioner Waiya commended the group for what he described as a courageous political decision and reaffirmed the government's commitment to inclusive leadership.

He said their endorsement reflected confidence in Governor Yusuf's administration and its efforts to deliver democratic dividends across Kano State.

Waiya maintained that criticisms against the governor would not distract the administration from pursuing its developmental agenda and assured members that the government would continue to work with the forum ahead of the 2027 elections.

The commissioner also received members of the Trusted Youth Awareness for Abubakar Kabir Abubakar Bichi, who similarly pledged support for Governor Yusuf's second-term bid.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, the group's chairman, Farouk Muhammad Dangora, praised the governor for approving the payment of outstanding entitlements to former councillors and cited ongoing development projects as justification for another term.

The group also requested Commissioner Waiya to serve as its Grand Patron while seeking closer collaboration with the Ministry of Information and Internal Affairs to promote the administration's programmes.

In his response, Waiya described Abubakar Kabir Abubakar Bichi as a committed leader dedicated to Kano's development and pledged the ministry's continued partnership with groups promoting the government's policies and programmes.

The dual endorsements add to growing political mobilization around Governor Yusuf as political alignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Kano State Government has constituted an Advisory Committee on Almajiri Education and Welfare Reform, in what appears to be a significant step toward developing policies aimed at transforming the traditional Almajiri system while preserving its religious and cultural heritage. 

A letter of appointment dated July 8, 2026, obtained exclusively by Nworisa Michael's Blog, shows that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf approved the establishment of the committee as part of efforts to address the socio-educational challenges associated with the Almajiri system. 

The document confirms the appointment of Haj. Aisha Haruna Kabuga, a National Council of Child Rights Advocate, as one of the members of the newly constituted advisory committee. 

According to the appointment letter, the committee has been mandated to develop strategies that will improve the welfare, literacy and future opportunities of Almajiri children while safeguarding the religious and cultural values that underpin the traditional Qur'anic education system. 

As part of its mandate, the committee is expected to pursue a three-pronged reform agenda. Its responsibilities include ensuring that policy recommendations respect the traditions of local communities and Qur'anic teachers (Mallams), developing a unified curriculum that integrates formal education, literacy, numeracy and vocational skills into the existing Qur'anic education system without compromising its spiritual objectives, and proposing sustainable welfare models to enhance the protection, health and dignity of children within the Almajiri system. 

The government noted that members of the committee were carefully selected based on their expertise, professional experience and deep understanding of the socio-cultural and religious dynamics of Kano State, expressing confidence that their contributions would help deliver a balanced and sustainable reform process. 

The initiative is expected to equip Almajiri children with skills needed to thrive in today's society while preserving the core values of the traditional educational system.

In the appointment letter, the Kano State Government expressed appreciation to Haj. Kabuga for accepting the responsibility and conveyed its confidence that she would make meaningful contributions toward achieving the objectives of the committee. The appointment was formally communicated in a letter signed by Umar Muhammad Jalo, Permanent Secretary, on behalf of the Secretary to the State Government. 

The establishment of the advisory committee signals the Kano State Government's latest effort to address the long-standing challenges associated with the Almajiri system through a policy-driven approach that seeks to balance educational reform with cultural and religious sensitivity.

Leader of the United Kingdom's Conservative Party, Kemi Badenoch, has urged the Labour government to retain its proposed 10-year qualifying period for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), insisting that temporary work visas should not automatically lead to permanent residency in Britain.

Badenoch made the call in a post on her X account on Monday while publishing a letter addressed to the UK Home Secretary. In the letter, she criticised moves by some Labour lawmakers to water down the government's proposed immigration reforms.

According to her, people who enter the UK on temporary work visas should not expect to remain permanently by default.

"People who come to Britain on temporary work visas should not automatically be able to stay forever," Badenoch wrote, adding that the Labour government's original proposal to make permanent settlement more difficult was the right approach.

The letter, jointly signed by Badenoch and the Conservative Party's Shadow Home Secretary, Chris Philp, warned against reports suggesting that about two million migrants who arrived in the UK on work visas between 2021 and the present could be exempted from the proposed changes.

Describing the reported exemption as "a grave mistake," the Conservative leader argued that Britain's previous immigration policies had shown that allowing migrants to qualify for permanent residency after only five years was too lenient.

She maintained that individuals who have not made what she described as a significant economic contribution over a 10-year period should return to their home countries once their temporary work visas expire.

Badenoch also argued that many migrants currently occupying low-paid and low-skilled jobs could be replaced by economically inactive British citizens if more employment opportunities were created for them.

According to her, granting Indefinite Leave to Remain after just five years places additional pressure on the country's welfare system because recipients become eligible for public benefits and may later apply for British citizenship.

She further rejected claims that extending the qualifying period to 10 years would amount to changing immigration rules retrospectively, insisting that holding a temporary work visa does not automatically confer the right to permanent settlement.

"The government is perfectly entitled to decide at any time the rules on indefinite rights of settlement, including in relation to those already in the country," she stated.

Offering bipartisan support, Badenoch said the Conservative Party would back Labour's original immigration proposals if they were introduced in Parliament without being weakened.

She added that Labour's final decision on the reforms would demonstrate whether the party was genuinely committed to reducing immigration and strengthening Britain's border controls.

President Bola Tinubu has criticised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over his call for a United Nations-led investigation into the abduction of 39 pupils and six teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, describing the request as politically motivated and unnecessary.

The President's position was conveyed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who argued that the governor's demand suggested a lack of confidence in Nigeria's security institutions despite their role in rescuing the victims after 56 days in captivity.

Speaking in an interview with The PUNCH, Onanuga said the Federal Government had no objection if the United Nations chose to investigate the incident but questioned the rationale behind the governor's appeal.

"The governor has just expressed his opinion that the UN should probe this incident. Our doors are open. Let the UN come if he thinks there is more to it than what our military has explained," Onanuga said.

He maintained that there was no reason for the country's security agencies to deliberately allow schoolchildren and teachers to remain in captivity for nearly two months, noting that some security operatives reportedly lost their lives during efforts to secure their release.

According to Onanuga, the military and the Department of State Services (DSS) had already provided accounts of the rescue operation, making calls for an international investigation unnecessary.

He described Makinde's position as "unwarranted" and "absolutely unnecessary," alleging that the governor's stance was influenced by political ambitions.

"It is just unfortunate that Mr Makinde, maybe because of politics, because he is a presidential candidate now, doesn't have any trust in our own institutions and is now calling on an external body to come and investigate," he said.

The presidential aide further accused the Oyo governor of politicising the incident.

"The man is just playing politics, and it is the politics of the bizarre. He wants to weaponise anything available, including dredging up a strange conspiracy theory," Onanuga added.

Governor Makinde had earlier called on the United Nations and other international human rights and accountability organisations to independently investigate the circumstances surrounding both the abduction and rescue of the pupils and teachers.

The appeal came shortly after the Federal Government formally handed over the rescued victims to the Oyo State Government at the State Secretariat.

According to Makinde, the nature of the incident warranted independent scrutiny beyond Nigeria's domestic institutions.

"The circumstances surrounding this incident are sufficiently grave and unusual to warrant independent scrutiny beyond our domestic institutions," the governor said.

He, however, clarified that his request was not intended to undermine Nigeria's security agencies but to promote transparency, establish the full facts surrounding the incident and restore public confidence.

The 45 victims 39 pupils and six teachers were abducted on May 15, 2026, when armed men attacked three schools in the Yawota and Ahoro-Esinle communities of Oriire Local Government Area. They were rescued after spending 56 days in captivity.

Adeniyi Adeyemi, the self-proclaimed Director-General of the purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), has claimed that the ₦400 million he allegedly paid to secure his appointment was borrowed, revealing that those who provided the funds have now petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to recover their money.

Speaking on Channels Television's Politics Today on Monday, Adeyemi said he took the loan specifically to obtain the appointment and is now under pressure from the lenders.

"I borrowed this money. In fact, those that I borrowed this money from have reported to the EFCC. They have written to the EFCC asking me to refund their money. I borrowed this money to pay for this appointment," he said.

Adeyemi described the government's handling of the matter as unfair, alleging that he had been publicly humiliated by certain individuals within the administration.

He also dismissed reports suggesting that a United States lobbying firm was helping him seek asylum, saying he only became aware of such claims through media reports.

According to him, his ability to follow developments surrounding the controversy has been limited after his social media accounts were allegedly taken down.

"I just ignore it because they sponsored a lot of people to bring my social media handle down. I don't really know much about what is going on again. I only hear from family and friends," he stated.

Adeyemi further denied reports that he was planning to flee Nigeria, insisting that he remains in the country.

The PFIPC controversy became public on June 11 after the Presidency, through the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, issued a statement declaring that no such agency exists under the Tinubu administration and describing Adeyemi as an impostor.

In a subsequent statement released on July 1, the Presidency said police investigations indicated that Adeyemi allegedly forged a presidential appointment letter purportedly signed by Gbajabiamila, operated a non-existent government agency and maintained 34 bank accounts, including nine allegedly opened in the names of fictitious government institutions.

According to the Presidency, concerns about the council first emerged in October 2025 after the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission reported that another organisation claiming government status was carrying out overlapping functions.

Despite the official position, Adeyemi has maintained that his appointment was legitimate. He argued that he openly operated for nearly three years, interacted with several ministries, departments and agencies, and hosted delegations from institutions including the EFCC and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

He also alleged that Gbajabiamila received ₦400 million through an intermediary to facilitate his appointment, later demanded an additional ₦200 million and sought 48 per cent of a purported ₦27.4 billion take-off grant for the council. Gbajabiamila's legal team has denied the allegations, describing them as false and threatening a ₦10 billion defamation suit.

However, in a separate interview with social media personality Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, Adeyemi admitted that he had never met Gbajabiamila in person and could not confirm the identity of the individual he claimed to have spoken with over the phone.

The controversy intensified after the PFIPC appeared in the 2026 Appropriation Act with an allocation of more than ₦1.3 billion, raising questions about how an agency described by the Presidency as fictitious was included in the national budget.

President Bola Tinubu has since directed the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the matter and submit its findings within 30 days.

Nollywood actress and African Action Congress (AAC) governorship candidate in Abia State, Doris Ogala, has stirred reactions on social media after declaring that she would become the state's next governor.

Ogala made the remark during a TikTok Live session, a video of which surfaced online on Sunday ahead of preparations for the 2027 governorship election.

Speaking during the livestream, the actress expressed confidence in her political ambition, insisting that Abia residents had "no choice" but to accept her as governor.

"I, Doris Ogala, as your governor, you don't have a choice. Doris will be your governor, you don't have a choice. God has said it, so shall it be. It is very simple. Why don't you get that?" she said.

The video has since attracted widespread attention on social media, generating mixed reactions from users.

Ogala recently emerged as the African Action Congress (AAC) governorship candidate for Abia State ahead of the 2027 general election.

Following her emergence, she pledged to unseat the incumbent governor, Alex Otti, promising to improve the welfare of residents, create employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth if elected.

Before joining partisan politics, Ogala built a career in Nollywood and later became actively involved in political advocacy through the AAC, participating in campaigns and public demonstrations on issues affecting Abia State.

In June 2026, the actress was hospitalised after reportedly collapsing during a political consultation in Umuahia. She was admitted to the Federal Medical Centre, where she later visited and prayed with patients from a wheelchair, an incident that also generated reactions on social media.

Former presidential aide and Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has claimed that he facilitated 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi's first meeting with a British Prime Minister.

Omokri made the assertion while responding to a social media user, Jane, who questioned the authenticity of a photograph he shared online, suggesting it was generated using artificial intelligence.

In a detailed response, Omokri denied the allegation, explaining that the image was taken at Madame Tussauds in London during a visit with his daughter. He said the photograph was captured by the museum's professional photographer after a staff member assisted with the pose.

Addressing comments about class and public image, Omokri highlighted his family's historical background and listed several world leaders he said he had met over the years.

According to him, he had been received by two consecutive British Prime Ministers, Theresa May and Boris Johnson, and claimed he invited Peter Obi to one of those meetings.

"I have also been received in audience by two consecutive British Prime Ministers, first Theresa May and then Boris Johnson, of which I invited Mr Peter Obi to join me, and that was the first time he met someone at that level," Omokri said.

He further stated that he had also been received by former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar and other world leaders, adding that photographs of those meetings are publicly available.

Omokri maintained that he does not use artificial intelligence to write or generate images, insisting that he prefers original work and authentic photographs.

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Policy Communications, Daniel Bwala, has said that many Nigerians who relocated overseas in search of greener pastures are facing harsh economic realities, despite earning salaries in foreign currencies.

Speaking during an appearance on The Morayo Show, Bwala argued that the expectations of many Nigerians who migrated, particularly to the United Kingdom, differ significantly from the reality they now face.

According to him, many degree holders are employed in jobs unrelated to their academic qualifications, including positions in care homes and warehouses.

Bwala maintained that some Nigerians who believe they are struggling at home may actually be in a better position than friends and relatives who left the country years ago.

He described the experience of many migrants as resembling "modern-day slavery," explaining that although some workers earn between £2,600 and £2,800 monthly, the high cost of living significantly reduces what they are left with after paying for rent, transportation, utilities, internet services and food.

According to him, the financial pressure forces many Nigerians abroad to take up two or three jobs just to meet their daily needs.

Bwala also argued that Nigerians earning modest incomes at home may benefit from stronger family and community support systems, unlike many migrants who have no one to rely on in difficult times.

He specifically noted that someone earning ₦60,000 in Nigeria could still receive assistance from relatives and friends when necessary, while many Nigerians living abroad often have to shoulder their burdens alone.

Governors from the 19 Northern states and members of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council on Wednesday convened in Kaduna for a high-level meeting aimed at addressing the region's growing security and development challenges, with the proposed creation of state police emerging as a key issue on the agenda.

The meeting, organised under the Northern States Governors' Forum (NSGF), is expected to examine strategies for tackling insecurity, boosting agriculture, addressing underdevelopment and advancing other critical issues affecting Northern Nigeria.

Welcoming participants, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani described the ongoing constitutional process on state police as a significant milestone in Nigeria's democratic journey, stressing that the current security realities demand a policing structure that is more responsive to local communities.

According to him, governors across political parties have consistently advocated for a decentralised policing system capable of confronting the rising threats posed by banditry, terrorism and kidnapping.

Sani argued that establishing state police would strengthen security operations by increasing personnel on the ground and improving response to local security challenges.

The governor also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as the Federal Government's commitment to the development of Northern Nigeria, citing interventions in transportation, agriculture, healthcare, education, infrastructure, energy and national security.

He praised the leadership of the Northern States Governors' Forum under Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, saying the forum has continued to promote regional cooperation beyond political affiliations.

While acknowledging that Nigeria still faces significant challenges, Sani maintained that measurable progress has been made through collaboration between the Federal Government and state governments.

He also applauded the National Assembly for advancing legislative efforts on the proposed state police framework, expressing optimism that the constitutional amendment process would soon be concluded.

According to the governor, the creation of state police has the potential to significantly strengthen Nigeria's security architecture by providing additional manpower to combat criminal groups operating across the region.

The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has rejected claims by former Borno State governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, that Northern voters would not support the party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the 2027 general election.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Kwankwaso described the assertion as misleading, insisting that Obi commands significant and growing support across Northern Nigeria.

He argued that no individual could claim to speak for the entire North or determine how millions of voters in the region would cast their ballots.

"It is both inaccurate and presumptuous for anyone to claim to speak for the entire North. The people of the region are politically conscious and will vote for the candidate they believe has the capacity, competence and integrity to lead Nigeria. Peter Obi enjoys genuine support across Northern Nigeria, and that support continues to grow," Kwankwaso stated.

The former Kano State governor pointed to the 2023 presidential election, noting that Obi secured about 2.8 million votes across the North, which he said reflected the former Anambra governor's increasing acceptance among Northern voters.

Kwankwaso further argued that the country's current economic challenges and growing public dissatisfaction have strengthened Obi's appeal ahead of the 2027 presidential race.

He also dismissed Sheriff's claim that Kano voters would reject Obi, maintaining that the people of the state have consistently demonstrated political independence by supporting candidates they consider credible, regardless of ethnic or religious background.

According to him, the proposed Obi-Kwankwaso alliance offers Nigerians a viable alternative capable of addressing the country's economic, security and governance challenges.

Kwankwaso urged Sheriff to focus on issues affecting Nigerians, particularly the worsening security and humanitarian situation in the North-East, instead of making what he described as divisive political statements.

Sheriff had earlier stated during a television interview that Northern voters would not back Peter Obi in the 2027 election, arguing that the former Anambra State governor lacked the regional support needed to secure victory.

The latest escalation follows attacks on several ships navigating the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's busiest oil shipping routes. Legal proceedings over the proposed deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties are set to resume today at the Court of Appeal in Abuja as the affected parties seek to overturn a Federal High Court judgment ordering their removal from the register of political parties.

A three-member panel of the appellate court, headed by Justice Abba Mohammed, is expected to hear the substantive appeals after earlier proceedings allowed all parties to regularise and exchange their court processes.

Besides the ADC, the Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Alliance (AA), Accord Party (AP), and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) are challenging the lower court's decision, which directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister them for allegedly failing to meet constitutional requirements for continued registration.

The Court of Appeal had earlier granted a stay of execution of the judgment, preventing INEC from enforcing the deregistration pending the determination of the appeals. The appellate court also faulted the trial judge for delivering judgment despite an earlier directive to suspend proceedings in the case.

The suit was instituted by the National Forum of Former Legislators, which argued that the affected political parties failed to achieve the electoral performance benchmarks required under the Constitution and the Electoral Act. The plaintiffs maintained that the parties did not secure the minimum level of electoral success required to retain their legal status.

However, the affected parties, alongside INEC, have urged the appellate court to set aside the judgment, insisting that the decision was legally flawed and should not stand.

Meanwhile, in a related development, the Federal High Court in Abuja ordered ADC National Welfare Secretary, Nkemakolam Ukandu, to pay ₦100 million in damages after striking out his suit against two judges over alleged bias and judicial misconduct. The Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) has clarified that the controversial Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC) never operated an active account with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), insisting that no government funds or salaries were released to the organisation.

The clarification follows growing public scrutiny over allegations that the purported agency fraudulently secured official recognition and opened government bank accounts using forged documents.

Speaking on the development, the Director of Press and Public Relations at the OAGF, Bawa Mokwa, explained that although an application was made to open a CBN account, the process was never completed because the required documentation to activate the account was not submitted.

According to him, while the Office of the Accountant-General initially authorised the account-opening process based on documents presented by the applicant, the account never became operational because the names of authorised signatories were never provided.

"The account has never seen the light of day. It has not received one kobo because it was never fully operational," Mokwa said, stressing that the absence of an operational account meant there was no avenue through which public funds could have been disbursed to the organisation.

He further dismissed claims that the Federal Government allocated funds or paid salaries to the agency, noting that the PFIPC had neither completed the legal requirements for receiving public funds nor recruited staff through the established procedures for federal agencies.

Mokwa explained that before any government agency can employ workers and place them on the federal payroll, it must first obtain approvals from the Federal Character Commission, the Budget Office and the Federal Civil Service Commission, after which the names of approved staff are forwarded to the OAGF for payment processing. He maintained that none of these procedures had been completed in the case of the PFIPC.

The OAGF's position comes days after the Presidency alleged that Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, who claimed to be Director-General of the PFIPC, fraudulently used forged government documents to facilitate the opening of CBN accounts in the name of the non-existent agency. The Presidency also stated that police investigations found no evidence that government funds were ever transferred into the accounts.

Authorities have since maintained that the PFIPC has no legal backing and that criminal proceedings against Adeyemi and two other suspects are ongoing before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed reports alleging that he was offered ₦500 billion to contest against the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi, in a bid to split votes in Nigeria's Southern region ahead of the 2027 general election.

Jonathan's position was made known in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Ikechukwu Eze, who described the report as entirely false, baseless and deliberately fabricated to mislead the public.

According to Eze, the publication, which claimed the former president disclosed being offered the huge sum to undermine Obi's electoral chances, lacked every basic element of credible journalism. He noted that the report failed to state where or when Jonathan allegedly made such a claim, who made the purported offer, or who witnessed the alleged conversation.

The media aide said the report appeared to have been deliberately concocted to drag the former president into needless political controversy and create unnecessary tension ahead of the election season.

Eze urged Nigerians to disregard the publication in its entirety, stressing that Jonathan never made such a statement and was not involved in any arrangement of the nature alleged in the report.

He further advised members of the public to verify sensational political stories before sharing them, warning that the approach of another election cycle often comes with an increase in misinformation, fake news and false attributions aimed at misleading citizens.

The former president's aide reiterated Jonathan's commitment to promoting peace, democracy and national unity, while calling on media organisations and the public to uphold truth, accuracy and responsible journalism in the dissemination of information.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by an additional two weeks, shifting the deadline from July 10 to July 24, 2026.

The announcement was made on Friday in Abuja by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, who said the decision followed a review of the exercise and consultations with the commission's state offices, political parties, civil society groups and other stakeholders.

According to him, the extension is intended to provide more time for eligible Nigerians who are yet to register ahead of future electoral activities.

The CVR exercise, which commenced on August 18, 2025, was originally scheduled to conclude on July 10 this year. However, INEC said the additional two weeks would ensure that more citizens have the opportunity to be included in the national voters register.

The commission noted that the decision reflects its commitment to inclusiveness and equal access to voter registration for all eligible Nigerians.

In a major technological upgrade, INEC also announced the introduction of a full self-service voter registration option for first-time registrants.

The new system will become operational on July 8, 2026, allowing eligible Nigerians to begin and complete their voter registration process online through the commission's dedicated portal.

According to the commission, the platform will enable users to complete the registration process, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without the need to physically visit an INEC registration centre.
