A Nigerian healthcare professional, Dr. Zainab Suleiman Buhari, has issued a passionate appeal to expectant mothers, warning against the growing reliance on unverified home remedies, herbal mixtures and social media advice during pregnancy, saying such practices may contribute to avoidable stillbirths and maternal complications.

In a public message titled "She Was Kicking Minutes Ago," shared via her Facebook page the doctor recounted a recent experience in a hospital ward where a woman, who had arrived at 38 weeks of pregnancy with a seemingly healthy baby, tragically lost the child shortly before delivery.

According to her, the grieving husband repeatedly asked, "Mama was fine this morning. She was kicking. What happened?"—a question she described as a painful reminder of the silent tragedies occurring in maternity wards.

Dr. Buhari argued that many pregnant women are increasingly turning to advice from social media platforms, family members and traditional remedies in an attempt to induce or ease labour, often without medical supervision.

She warned that taking herbal concoctions, labour-inducing teas, roots or unapproved medications could overstimulate the uterus, causing contractions that are too strong and too frequent, a condition known medically as uterine hyperstimulation. According to her, this may reduce the baby's oxygen supply, increase the risk of placental complications and, in severe cases, result in stillbirth.

The doctor also cautioned that excessive stimulation before delivery may weaken the uterus, increasing the risk of heavy bleeding after childbirth, retained placenta and other life-threatening complications for mothers.

Beyond the use of unapproved substances, she highlighted other practices that could place pregnancies at risk, including skipping antenatal care (ANC), sleeping flat on the back during late pregnancy, hiding symptoms from healthcare workers and relying on internet advice instead of medical professionals.

Dr. Buhari stressed that reduced fetal movement, bleeding, severe headaches, swelling or the breaking of the water before labour should never be ignored or treated with online advice alone, urging expectant mothers to seek immediate medical attention.

She emphasized that antenatal care remains one of the most effective ways to detect complications early, noting that healthcare workers are better equipped to assess each pregnancy based on medical history, blood pressure, ultrasound findings and fetal growth.

As part of her recommendations, she advised pregnant women to register early for antenatal care, attend clinic appointments consistently, monitor their baby's movements from the third trimester, sleep on their left side where possible, avoid taking any labour-inducing substance without medical approval, and report to hospital promptly when labour begins or when warning signs appear.

While acknowledging the fears, pressures and anxiety many expectant mothers experience, Dr. Buhari appealed for greater trust in trained healthcare providers rather than unverified advice circulating online or through informal networks.

She concluded by urging families and communities to support pregnant women in seeking professional medical care, emphasizing that many pregnancy-related deaths and stillbirths can be prevented through timely intervention and adherence to established maternal healthcare guidelines.

The doctor's message has resonated widely on social media, sparking renewed conversations about maternal health, antenatal care and the need for stronger public awareness on safe pregnancy practices.

The Federal Government has filed terrorism-related charges against three men accused of participating in the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The suspects, identified as Abdulrazak Umar (also known as Abu Khalifa or Abu Khalid), Yunusa Musa (also known as Yunusa bin Musa), and Shamsu Adamu Sani (also known as Abu Itisar), are facing a 10-count charge bordering on terrorism, kidnapping, concealment of information, incitement, and illegal mining.

According to court documents filed on Friday, the three defendants, all natives of Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State, allegedly conspired with Muhammad Sani, Jibril Mohammed, and Ibrahim Khabab between January and May 2026 to carry out the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oyo State.

The Federal Government said the alleged offences contravene Section 26(1) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Prosecutors further alleged that the suspects aided the kidnapping operation and deliberately concealed information regarding the identities and activities of those said to have masterminded the attack, contrary to Sections 26(2) and 16(1) of the Act.

The charge also accuses the three men of professing membership of Darul Salam, which the government described as an affiliate of Jama'atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis Sudan (Ansaru), a proscribed terrorist organisation in Nigeria. The alleged offence was said to have occurred on or about June 2, 2026, in violation of Section 25(1) of the Terrorism Act.

In addition, the first defendant, Abdulrazak Umar, was specifically accused of providing training and operational instructions to terrorist members, as well as using a WhatsApp group titled "The Oneness of Allah is the Foundation of Peace" to incite acts of terrorism.

The prosecution said the allegation violates Sections 15 and 2(2)(g) of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, as well as Section 18 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015..

The recent death of Mary Habila at the residence of the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has reignited public calls for a fresh investigation into the unresolved disappearance of five engineers who went missing in Ebonyi State in 2021.

The renewed appeal was made by social commentator Charles Ogbu in a detailed post shared on his Facebook page, where he revisited the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the engineers, popularly referred to as the "NELAN Five," and urged authorities to reopen the case.

According to Ogbu, the renewed attention is not intended to link the two incidents directly but to remind Nigerians that several unanswered questions surrounding the disappearance of the engineers remain unresolved nearly five years later.

The five missing engineers Engr. Nelson Onyemeh, Engr. Ernest Edeani, Engr. Ikechukwu Ejiofor, Engr. Samuel Aneke, and Engr. Stanley Nwazulum were employees of NELAN Consulting Limited, an Enugu-based engineering consultancy engaged by the African Development Bank (AfDB) to supervise the construction of the Abakaliki Ring Road project during Umahi's tenure as Governor of Ebonyi State.

Ogbu alleged that tensions developed between the consulting firm and the Ebonyi State Government after the engineers reportedly refused to approve project certificates they believed violated AfDB supervision guidelines. According to the account, the disagreement centred on issues relating to project control, certification and payment approvals.

On November 3, 2021, the five engineers reportedly travelled from Enugu to Ebonyi State in an official company vehicle for project supervision but never returned. Their whereabouts have remained unknown ever since.

The Ebonyi State Government at the time attributed the disappearance to suspected kidnappers operating within the Effium and Ezza-Effium communal crisis area and announced that security agencies had commenced search operations.

However, Ogbu noted that then-Governor Umahi later publicly stated that the engineers had been killed and buried in the bush by suspected Ezza militia members, despite investigations by security agencies still being ongoing.

According to him, the families of the missing engineers rejected that explanation, insisting that their loved ones were specifically targeted because of professional disagreements connected to the road project rather than becoming victims of communal violence.

He further stated that although security agencies later presented skeletal remains believed to belong to the missing engineers, independent DNA tests commissioned by their families reportedly failed to establish any match. Ogbu said the results allegedly showed that one of the remains belonged to a female, further deepening the families' concerns over the official narrative.

The Facebook post also referenced allegations made by the families that phone tracking linked a suspected kidnapper to individuals allegedly connected with the road project. Those individuals have denied any wrongdoing, and no court has established the allegations as fact.

Ogbu further highlighted concerns raised by the families over the conduct of the investigation, including the reported removal of a key investigator, the continuation of court proceedings without recovering the victims' bodies, and the alleged impersonation of representatives of NELAN at project meetings after the engineers disappeared.

Since 2021, the families have consistently maintained that the engineers disappeared while carrying out legitimate official duties and have continued to demand an independent federal investigation into the case.

Their campaign has included petitions to President Bola Tinubu, the National Assembly, the National Human Rights Commission, and several security agencies. In March 2026, they also staged a protest at the Federal Ministry of Works in Abuja, demanding justice and accountability.

According to Ogbu, legal representatives for the families have recently obtained Certified True Copies of court proceedings in the matter and petitioned the National Judicial Council (NJC), the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), and other relevant bodies, alleging irregularities in the handling of the case.

The criminal proceedings involving six defendants charged over the disappearance remain before the Ebonyi State High Court. Court records indicate that the matter has experienced repeated adjournments and delays, while the families continue to insist that justice cannot be served until the fate of the missing engineers is conclusively established.

Neither the Minister of Works, David Umahi, nor other individuals mentioned in Ogbu's account have publicly responded to the renewed claims contained in the Facebook post. The allegations also remain unproven in court.

With fresh public attention following the recent incident at the minister's residence, the renewed appeal has once again brought the unresolved disappearance of the NELAN Five back into national focus, as their families continue to call for an independent investigation capable of uncovering what truly happened to the engineers.

President Bola Tinubu has criticised Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde over his call for a United Nations-led investigation into the abduction of 39 pupils and six teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, describing the request as politically motivated and unnecessary.

The President's position was conveyed by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who argued that the governor's demand suggested a lack of confidence in Nigeria's security institutions despite their role in rescuing the victims after 56 days in captivity.

Speaking in an interview with The PUNCH, Onanuga said the Federal Government had no objection if the United Nations chose to investigate the incident but questioned the rationale behind the governor's appeal.

"The governor has just expressed his opinion that the UN should probe this incident. Our doors are open. Let the UN come if he thinks there is more to it than what our military has explained," Onanuga said.

He maintained that there was no reason for the country's security agencies to deliberately allow schoolchildren and teachers to remain in captivity for nearly two months, noting that some security operatives reportedly lost their lives during efforts to secure their release.

According to Onanuga, the military and the Department of State Services (DSS) had already provided accounts of the rescue operation, making calls for an international investigation unnecessary.

He described Makinde's position as "unwarranted" and "absolutely unnecessary," alleging that the governor's stance was influenced by political ambitions.

"It is just unfortunate that Mr Makinde, maybe because of politics, because he is a presidential candidate now, doesn't have any trust in our own institutions and is now calling on an external body to come and investigate," he said.

The presidential aide further accused the Oyo governor of politicising the incident.

"The man is just playing politics, and it is the politics of the bizarre. He wants to weaponise anything available, including dredging up a strange conspiracy theory," Onanuga added.

Governor Makinde had earlier called on the United Nations and other international human rights and accountability organisations to independently investigate the circumstances surrounding both the abduction and rescue of the pupils and teachers.

The appeal came shortly after the Federal Government formally handed over the rescued victims to the Oyo State Government at the State Secretariat.

According to Makinde, the nature of the incident warranted independent scrutiny beyond Nigeria's domestic institutions.

"The circumstances surrounding this incident are sufficiently grave and unusual to warrant independent scrutiny beyond our domestic institutions," the governor said.

He, however, clarified that his request was not intended to undermine Nigeria's security agencies but to promote transparency, establish the full facts surrounding the incident and restore public confidence.

The 45 victims 39 pupils and six teachers were abducted on May 15, 2026, when armed men attacked three schools in the Yawota and Ahoro-Esinle communities of Oriire Local Government Area. They were rescued after spending 56 days in captivity.

The pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom following a security operation.

The development was announced on Friday by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a post on his official X account.

"Finally, all the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Oriire, Oyo have been rescued by our security agencies," Onanuga wrote.

He also shared a video in which one of the rescued victims, Rachael Alamu, Principal of Community High School, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu and the security agencies for securing their release.

"President sir, our father, we are grateful. We understand your commitment to our safety and we appreciate all you did for us. Every security operative tried so much and that is why we are still alive today. God bless you," she said in the video.

The rescue followed coordinated security operations involving federal security agencies, according to information released by the Presidency.

The victims were abducted earlier in the week in a high-profile attack that drew nationwide concern and prompted intensified rescue efforts by security operatives.

The successful operation comes days after authorities confirmed the arrest of several suspected kidnappers while others were reportedly killed during the operation.

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to tackling insecurity and ensuring the safety of citizens across the country.

A Chief Magistrates' Court in Katsina has remanded Dr. Bashir Kurfi, a lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, over allegations that he falsely accused the Katsina State Government of sponsoring bandits to perform the Hajj pilgrimage.

Chief Magistrate Zaharaddeen Kofar Soro gave the order after the Katsina State Police Command arraigned the lecturer on charges of alleged defamation of character and injurious falsehood.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), Dr. Kurfi made the allegations during an interview on Trust TV on June 24, 2026, where he reportedly claimed that the Katsina State Government sponsored some bandit leaders to participate in the Hajj exercise.

The police charged the lecturer with two counts under Sections 308 and 309(1) of the Penal Code Law of Katsina State, arguing that the remarks were false, malicious and capable of damaging the reputation of both the state government and its people.

When the charges were read, Dr. Kurfi pleaded not guilty.

Following his plea, the prosecution urged the court to remand the defendant in police custody pending the conclusion of investigations, maintaining that granting him bail at this stage could interfere with the investigation.

Counsel to the defendant, A.D. Umar, opposed the application and asked the court to admit his client to bail, insisting that he was entitled to his liberty while facing trial.

After listening to both parties, the Chief Magistrate ordered that the police continue with their investigation and directed that the defendant remain in police custody until the next hearing.

The matter was adjourned to Monday, July 14, 2026, for continuation of proceedings.

Speaking with journalists after the court session, defence counsel A.D. Umar expressed confidence that his client would ultimately be vindicated.

Dr. Kurfi was subsequently escorted back to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) of the Katsina State Police Command.

The case comes days after the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced that operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) arrested suspected bandit leaders returning from the Hajj pilgrimage at the Umaru Musa Yar'Adua Airport in Katsina.

suspected kidnap kingpin, identified as Abubakar Usman, has been arrested following a security operation that led to the rescue of a woman abducted in Delta State after her captors allegedly demanded a ₦100 million ransom.

The development was disclosed by security advocate and founder of SafeCity Security Service, Harrison Gwamnishu, in a statement shared via his official Facebook page.

According to Gwamnishu, the victim, Mrs. Blessing Chiedu, a native of Umunede Kingdom, was abducted on July 2, 2026, along the Ani-Ifekide Farm Road in Ubulu-Uku. Following information about the incident, he said the matter was immediately escalated to the Delta State Police Command's Anti-Kidnapping Squad in Asaba, led by CSP Osakpolor.

He explained that a rescue operation, aided by the SafeCity Hydra Tech Surveillance System, was launched, leading to the successful rescue of the victim along the Ubulu-Unor/Ashama Road. She was rescued alive and unharmed.

Gwamnishu said security operatives immediately launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects, with the operation continuing through the night until about 6:45 a.m. when the surveillance system reportedly traced the gang to a hideout in the Ogwashi-Uku/Adonta Forest.

He stated that a gun battle ensued during the operation, resulting in the arrest of Abubakar Usman, described as one of the most wanted suspects, while other members of the gang reportedly escaped into the forest with their firearm.

According to Gwamnishu, preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect and his gang have allegedly been linked to several kidnapping incidents across Igbodo, Umunede and neighbouring communities, where they are accused of collecting millions of naira in ransom from victims' families.

He commended the Delta State Police Command, officers of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad, members of the Nigeria Forest Security Service, local security volunteers and community leaders for their roles in the operation.

Gwamnishu also expressed appreciation to the Delta State Government for creating what he described as an enabling environment for security agencies to carry out the operation, while reaffirming his commitment to working with security stakeholders to combat kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state.

The Delta State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement on the operation at the time of filing this report.

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, has directed security personnel to immediately engage and neutralise bandits and terrorists once deployed, warning that any operative who delays action while waiting for approval would be treated as a bandit.

Musa gave the directive on Wednesday in Sokoto State during the commissioning of 62 operational vehicles and other security equipment valued at ₦27.1 billion, procured by the Sokoto State Government to strengthen security operations across the state.

Addressing troops at the event, the Defence Minister stressed that soldiers and other security operatives must not hesitate to confront criminal elements whenever they are deployed for operations.

He warned that waiting for further instructions before engaging terrorists or bandits would not be tolerated.

"Once you are deployed, do not wait for any order from anybody to shoot any bandit or any terrorist. I want to make that very loud and clear. Anybody who refuses to shoot or kill any bandit or terrorist in the name of waiting for an order, we will treat you like a bandit," Musa said.

The minister also urged personnel to properly maintain the newly commissioned vehicles and equipment, noting that they were acquired at enormous cost to improve security across the state.

According to him, the resources invested in procuring the equipment could have been channelled to other developmental projects, making it necessary for security agencies to ensure they are effectively utilised and well maintained.

"It is important for those that will handle this equipment. These equipment cost billions of naira that could have been used for other aspects but have been dedicated to this.

"So I want to charge you that you must maintain this equipment very well. We will come after a year to see how these equipment are doing," he added.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Gboko Branch, has called on legal practitioners across the country to play a more active role in addressing Nigeria's persistent socio-economic and security challenges through lawful and practical solutions.

The charge was made during the 2026 Law Week of the NBA Gboko Branch, where the Branch Chairman, Felix Zahemen Uwar, urged lawyers to remain steadfast in their constitutional responsibilities as defenders of justice and protectors of citizens' rights.

According to Uwar, Nigeria's current challenges require the legal profession to demonstrate greater commitment to justice, accountability, and the rule of law.

"As lawyers, we are defenders of justice and guardians of the rights of every citizen. At a time when the nation is confronted with numerous challenges, our voices, actions and dedication to justice are needed more than ever," he said.

Delivering the keynote address on the theme, "Insecurity: Legal and Socio-Economic Perspectives," Dr. Steven Andzenge, Executive Director of Legal Services representing the North Central zone on the Executive Management Team of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), called on Nigerians to reject violence and embrace dialogue, tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

He stressed the need for government at all levels to strengthen institutions, improve governance, invest in human capital and ensure that security policies are implemented within the framework of the Constitution.

Andzenge, a former Executive Commissioner of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), also urged members of both the Bench and the Bar to continue defending the Constitution with courage, uphold justice without fear or favour, advocate meaningful legal reforms, and ensure that the rule of law remains the foundation of Nigeria's democracy.

He further noted that ensuring national security is a collective responsibility, adding that lasting peace cannot be achieved by government alone but requires the active participation and cooperation of all Nigerians.

The speakers maintained that stronger institutions, responsible leadership and unwavering respect for the rule of law remain critical to overcoming the country's security and developmental challenges.

The Kano State Urban Planning and Development Authority has called on ward heads and residents across the state to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious or unauthorized building projects within their communities.

The Acting Managing Director of KNUPDA, Tpl. Nura Ma'ude, made the appeal following the discovery of an unauthorized underground structure during the Authority's routine monitoring and inspection of building development approvals in Mariri, located in Kumbotso Local Government Area.

According to him, the structure involved an underground excavation estimated to be between 20 and 40 feet deep and was being carried out without obtaining the necessary approval from the Authority.

Following the discovery, KNUPDA immediately sealed the property and directed the owner to report to the Authority for further investigation and appropriate regulatory action.

Ma'ude reaffirmed the Authority's commitment to enforcing building regulations across the state, warning that KNUPDA would not hesitate to initiate legal action against individuals or developers who undertake construction projects without securing the required approvals.

He further urged ward heads and members of the public to support the Authority's efforts by remaining alert and reporting any new construction activities suspected to be unauthorized in their neighbourhoods, stressing that community cooperation is vital to ensuring public safety, orderly urban development and the prevention of avoidable disasters.

The League for Societal Protection Against Drug Abuse (LESPADA) participated in the public destruction of seized narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances organised by the NDLEA Kano Strategic Command and the NDLEA Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) Special Area Command as part of ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking in Kano State.

The exercise, which took place at Hawan Kalibawa in Dawakin-Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State on Monday, brought together stakeholders involved in the fight against substance abuse and drug trafficking.

As part of its contribution to prevention and public enlightenment, LESPADA distributed copies of The Truth About Drugs educational booklets to participants and guests during the exercise to promote drug abuse prevention and raise awareness about the dangers associated with illicit drug use, particularly among young people and vulnerable members of society.

During the exercise, the NDLEA Kano Strategic Command destroyed a total of 11,809.427 kilograms of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. The exhibits included 7,799.314 kilograms of Cannabis sativa, 0.446 kilograms of cocaine, 2.030 kilograms of heroin, 2,781.153 kilograms of psychotropic substances, 0.127 kilograms of methamphetamine, 14.600 kilograms of Barbitone Sodium BP 100mg, 0.246 kilograms of Pemolin tablets, 375.641 kilograms of Exol-5, 367.870 kilograms of pregabalin, 270 kilograms of substances of abuse, 200 kilograms of herbal mixtures and 79 kilograms of assorted expired drugs.

Similarly, the NDLEA MAKIA Special Area Command destroyed an additional 349.519 kilograms of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances comprising 10.499 kilograms of cocaine, 11 kilograms of heroin, 322 kilograms of tramadol and six kilograms of herbal mixtures locally known as Akuskura.

The public destruction of the seized exhibits formed part of broader efforts by law enforcement agencies and community stakeholders to curb the growing menace of drug abuse and illicit trafficking across Kano State and Nigeria as a whole.

The participation of LESPADA in the exercise comes as its Executive Director, Ambassador Maryam Hassan, who also serves as the State Coordinator of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World recently joined the Kano State Special Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking following her appointment by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, further strengthening collaboration between government institutions and civil society organisations in the fight against substance abuse in the state.

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to make public the academic qualifications and credentials submitted by all candidates seeking elective office in Nigeria, arguing that transparency is essential to strengthening public trust in the country's electoral process.

Obi made the call on Tuesday in a post shared on his social media platforms while reflecting on portions of the nomination forms completed by candidates aspiring to contest elections under INEC's guidelines.

According to the former governor of Anambra State, one section of the nomination form asks candidates whether they have ever been adjudged mentally unfit or declared to be of unsound mind by a competent authority.

The question, Obi said, prompted broader reflections about the quality of leadership currently being provided in the country amid worsening economic hardship and insecurity.

He questioned whether politics should dominate national discourse at a time when Nigerians continue to grapple with kidnappings, violent attacks, rising poverty and food insecurity.

"When citizens cannot travel safely on highways, security personnel and children are being abducted, and millions remain uncertain about their next meal, national attention should be focused on solving these urgent problems rather than endless political calculations," Obi argued.

The former presidential candidate maintained that a responsive government would treat the country's security and humanitarian challenges as a national emergency and mobilise all relevant institutions, security agencies, experts and community leaders towards finding lasting solutions.

Obi also drew attention to another question contained in the nomination form regarding whether a candidate had ever submitted forged certificates to INEC, insisting that the issue underscores the need for greater openness in the electoral process.

He argued that if candidates are required to submit academic qualifications and other credentials to the electoral body, the public should equally have access to such information to independently assess those seeking public office.

According to him, publishing candidates' certificates and credentials would improve accountability, strengthen democracy and deepen citizens' confidence in the electoral system.

"Transparency strengthens democracy and builds public trust. Nigeria's challenges are too serious for politics as usual. What the country requires is leadership driven by competence, character, capacity, compassion and commitment to service," Obi stated.

A civil society organisation, the Centre for Security and Peace Advancement (CSPA), has urged Nigerians to better understand the operational realities and risks facing security agencies during rescue missions involving abducted victims held in remote forests across the country.

The organisation said public expectations that the Armed Forces of Nigeria should immediately storm every identified kidnappers’ hideout often overlook the complex and dangerous conditions under which such operations are conducted.

Speaking on behalf of the group, its Executive Director, Abdul Ganiyu, explained that military and police rescue missions are not straightforward combat exercises, stressing that the safety of abducted victims remains the top priority in all tactical decisions.

According to him, kidnappers frequently use hostages as human shields and often relocate victims across multiple concealed locations within vast forest environments, making direct military assaults highly risky.

“The public must understand that rescue operations are not as simple as deploying troops into the forest to engage criminals. In many situations, abductors position victims in ways that make any sudden attack potentially fatal for the hostages,” Ganiyu said.

He further noted that security forces are required to rely heavily on intelligence gathering, surveillance operations, negotiation channels, and carefully coordinated tactical planning before carrying out any offensive action.

Ganiyu added that forests used as criminal hideouts are often difficult terrain, with limited access routes, poor visibility, and strategic ambush points known only to the kidnappers, giving them a tactical advantage in many cases.

He warned that poorly planned or rushed military operations could lead to unintended consequences, including mass casualties among abducted persons and even security personnel.

Citing global counter-insurgency and anti-banditry experiences, the CSO executive said that security commanders often avoid immediate large-scale assaults where the risk to hostages is high, preferring intelligence-led and precision-based interventions.

While acknowledging the frustration of Nigerians over persistent kidnapping cases, the organisation maintained that operational decisions must be guided by intelligence assessments and professional judgment rather than emotional pressure or public demand for swift action.

The group also commended the Armed Forces of Nigeria, intelligence services, and other security agencies for what it described as their continued efforts under difficult and life-threatening conditions to rescue abducted citizens.

Ganiyu further called on communities to play a stronger role in supporting security operations by providing timely and credible intelligence that could help identify kidnappers’ movements, hideouts, and logistical networks.

“Every rescue operation must strike a balance between urgency and caution. The ultimate goal is not just to confront criminals but to ensure that abducted Nigerians return home alive,” he added.

Kaduna State Police Command has rescued three kidnap victims who spent over 40 days in captivity and arrested five suspected informants allegedly linked to the kidnapping network.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Kaduna.

According to Hassan, the rescue operation was carried out by a joint security team led by personnel from Fushin Kada in collaboration with the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Hunkuyi following sustained intelligence gathering and surveillance operations.

He explained that security operatives tracked the suspected hideout of the kidnappers through coordinated intelligence efforts.

“Upon sighting the advancing security personnel, the bandits fled the area, abandoning the victims who were subsequently rescued unharmed,” Hassan stated.

The rescued victims were identified as Ekechikwu Omale, Ummi Salisu from Kudan Local Government Area of Kaduna State, and Pastor Daniel Tanko Bawa from Tufa Village in Niger State.

Police said the victims were immediately taken to a police medical facility for examination and treatment before being reunited with their families.

Hassan further disclosed that five suspected informants were arrested during the course of investigations.

According to him, preliminary findings indicated that the suspects allegedly provided intelligence and logistical support to the kidnappers.

“The suspects confessed to their involvement in the crime during interrogation,” he added.

Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, commended security personnel for their professionalism and collaboration, which he said contributed significantly to the successful operation.

Muhammad reiterated the command’s resolve to combat kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state.

He also urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information, stressing that community collaboration remains vital in tackling insecurity.

The police commissioner added that investigations were ongoing to apprehend other members of the criminal network and ensure all those connected to the crime face justice.

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to supporting ongoing efforts aimed at ensuring the safe rescue of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State.

Aneke gave the assurance on Saturday in Abuja during the Nigerian Air Force Second Quarter 2026 Route March Exercise.

Represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Air Vice Marshal Abubakar Abdullahi, the Air Chief said the Nigerian Air Force remains committed to strengthening collaboration with other security agencies in addressing security challenges across the country.

He noted that NAF would continue to support joint security operations focused on protecting lives and property while advancing broader national security objectives.

According to him, the route march exercise reflects the Air Force’s commitment to maintaining the health, physical fitness, and operational readiness of its personnel.

He explained that a physically fit workforce remains essential for meeting the demands of modern military operations and responding effectively to security threats nationwide.

Aneke further stated that the exercise promotes teamwork, camaraderie, esprit de corps, and overall wellness among personnel, factors he described as critical to effective service delivery.

He encouraged personnel to embrace regular physical exercise and healthy lifestyles to improve both their physical and mental well-being.

The Air Chief also directed officers, airmen, airwomen, and civilian staff to actively participate in weekly Wednesday sporting activities across Nigerian Air Force formations, noting that such activities promote discipline, fitness, and social cohesion.

He added that regular sporting engagements would also support talent discovery ahead of the Armed Forces of Nigeria Games and discourage behaviours capable of affecting personnel performance and professionalism.
