The Minister of Youth Development has clarified remarks made during a recent appearance on Channels Television regarding ongoing reforms of the National Youth Service Corps, stressing that no decision has been taken to replace the scheme's current uniform with any particular fabric design.
The clarification followed widespread media reports suggesting that the Federal Government had concluded plans to replace the traditional NYSC khaki uniform with locally produced Adire fabric.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the minister explained that while he referenced both Adire and Ankara during the television interview, they were merely examples of proposals that had emerged during consultations surrounding the reform process and not an official policy announcement.
According to him, no fabric or design has been approved as a replacement for the existing NYSC uniform.
"For the record, what we are considering are different options that tick all the right boxes in terms of professional outlook, a unique national identity, durability, functionality, cost-effectiveness, and the projection of national pride," the minister stated.
He added that any eventual decision would be guided by extensive stakeholder consultations and what best serves the interests of both the scheme and the country.
The minister urged Nigerians to focus on the broader objectives of the ongoing NYSC reform agenda rather than allowing discussions about uniforms to dominate public attention.
According to him, the proposed reforms are aimed at making the scheme more relevant to current realities by improving employability opportunities for graduates, promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening national integration, enhancing service delivery and creating a smoother transition from education into productive careers.
He noted that while public interest in possible changes to the NYSC uniform was understandable, such discussions should not overshadow the wider reforms intended to empower Nigerian youths and reposition the scheme as a stronger platform for national development.
The minister also expressed appreciation for the feedback and contributions received from Nigerians on the reform process, assuring the public that all proposals would continue to be carefully evaluated in the national interest.
