Keep Children Out Of School, Face Arrest In Anambra, Soludo Warns Parents

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has warned parents against keeping their children out of school, stating that those who deny their children access to education could face arrest and prosecution under existing state laws.

The governor gave the warning on Wednesday during the 2026 Children’s Day celebration held in Awka with the theme, “Future Now: Promoting Inclusion for Every Nigerian Child.”

Soludo said his administration would strengthen enforcement measures aimed at reducing the number of out-of-school children, stressing that the state already provides free education for pupils and students.

“We will commence full enforcement. If we find any child outside during school hours, the responsibility will fall on the parents,” he said.

He further warned that parents whose children are found hawking, roaming streets, or engaging in non-school activities during learning hours could face sanctions, including detention.

“We will arrest the parents and keep them in custody for some days while ensuring the child returns to school. Denying a child education, especially when education is free, is unacceptable,” the governor added.

According to Soludo, Anambra currently has one of the lowest rates of out-of-school children in Nigeria, citing an estimated 2.9 per cent figure from UNESCO recorded before the introduction of the state’s free education policy.

He reiterated his administration’s target of reducing the figure to zero and disclosed plans to establish a Juvenile Correctional Centre to ensure young offenders are separated from adult inmates.

The governor also pledged stronger policies to support inclusive education and announced plans to introduce a toll-free line through which residents can report cases of child abuse and welfare concerns.

Delivering President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Children’s Day message, Soludo emphasised the need to guarantee equal opportunities and inclusion for every child regardless of background, status, or physical condition.

Also speaking at the event, Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Esther Onyekesi, commended the state government’s efforts toward child welfare and urged children to remain disciplined and committed to their education.
