OPINION: A New Dawn for Kano Youths: Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s Safe Corridor Initiative and the Hope of a Better Tomorrow

The recent approval for the take off of Phase III of the Safe Corridor Programme by the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on the 28th of April 2026 at the Executive Council meeting, which took place at the Council Chamber of the Kano State Government House, stands as one of the boldest and most compassionate decisions ever taken in the interest of Kano youths. This visionary programme, aimed at rehabilitating 1,000 repentant youths across the state for the first phase of the rehabilitation, is not just a government initiative; it is a message of hope, mercy, restoration, and a ray of hope indicating a brighter future ahead for Kano State.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has once again demonstrated that true leadership is not only about constructing roads and buildings, but also about rebuilding lives, restoring hope and dignity, and creating opportunities for those who once lost their path or misled. At a time when many societies choose punitive and kinetic measures, over civil and diplomatic approach to systematically transform the lives, through  rehabilitation, and Empowerment, His Excellency has chosen humanity over condemnation and attitudinal change over abandonment. This singular decision reflects a leader with a deep love for his people and a sincere commitment to securing the future of Kano State.

The Safe Corridor Programme is a noble initiative that will go a long way in shaping the lives of thousands of young people who, due to hardship, peer pressure, misguidance, unemployment, societal neglect and social background, found themselves involved in destructive activities. 

Through this programme, these youths will now have the opportunity to be rehabilitated, mentored, educated, empowered, and reintegrated into society as responsible citizens. This is not only a security enhancement strategy but also a humanitarian intervention capable of changing countless destinies.

Indeed, this initiative is a legacy project that future generations will remember Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for. History will surely record that during his administration, hope was restored to many hopeless youths and families. A society cannot develop when its youths are neglected, and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf clearly understands that the strength of Kano lies in its young population. His continued investments in empowerment, education, social protection, and security have shown his dedication to inclusive governance and human development. 

Special commendation must also go to the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs Kano State, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, whom I proudly tag as “ *Limamin Gyaran Matasan Kano* ” the spiritual guide and reformer of the youth. His passion, foresight, courage, and leadership in championing youth rehabilitation and peace building deserve immense praise. He has consistently demonstrated uncommon commitment towards transforming the lives of Kano youths and promoting peaceful coexistence across the state.

Reports on the Kano Safe Corridor initiative have highlighted how the programme was designed to provide mentorship, rehabilitation, economic support, and opportunities for repentant youths to abandon political violence and all other forms of thuggery, to embrace peace and a life of dignity. Through his leadership and strategic engagement with community leaders, traditional institutions, and stakeholders, Honourable Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya has become a symbol of hope for many young people seeking a second chance in life.

The importance of this programme cannot be overemphasized. When youths are rehabilitated and empowered, crime reduces, peace flourishes, families become stronger, and society becomes more stable. This initiative will not only reduce thuggery and social unrest but will also create a generation of productive citizens who can contribute positively to the economic and social development of Kano State. 

It is a practical demonstration that government can combine compassion with responsibility in addressing societal problems.

Kano State is blessed to have leaders who understand that the future belongs to the youth and that every young person deserves an opportunity to change. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and Amb. BREAKING: EFCC Arrests Energy Commission DG Mustapha Abdullahi Over Alleged ₦500bn Fraud

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have reportedly arrested the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, over alleged money laundering offences involving funds estimated at about ₦500 billion.

Sources within the anti-graft agency disclosed on Wednesday that Abdullahi was arrested in Abuja and is currently being held in the custody of the commission as investigations continue.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the probe centres on alleged financial misconduct linked to hundreds of billions of naira.

One source reportedly stated that the EFCC arrested the Energy Commission boss over money laundering allegations involving funds estimated at approximately ₦500 billion.

Efforts to obtain official confirmation from EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, were unsuccessful as he could not be reached at the time this report was filed.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had appointed Abdullahi as Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria on October 24, 2023.

Further details surrounding the arrest and the ongoing investigation are expected to emerge as the case develops.

BREAKING: Court Jails Ex-Minister 75 Years Amid Reports Of 2027 Governorship Ambition

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sentenced former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, to 75 years imprisonment over a ₦33.8 billion fraud and money laundering case linked to the Zungeru and Mambilla hydroelectric power projects.

The judgment comes amid recent reports that the former minister had shown interest in the 2027 governorship race, with claims circulating that he recently obtained a governorship nomination form ahead of the elections.

Delivering judgment, Justice James Omotosho found Mamman guilty on all 12 counts filed against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The charges bordered on conspiracy and money laundering involving funds allocated for the Zungeru and Mambilla hydroelectric power projects.

According to the court, the prison terms attached to the 12 counts are to run consecutively, resulting in a combined jail term of 75 years.

Justice Omotosho further ruled that the sentence should take effect from the date of the former minister’s arrest, noting that Mamman was sentenced in absentia.

The court also directed security agencies to arrest the former minister wherever he is found and ensure he is taken into custody.

In addition, the judge ordered that all recovered funds and properties linked to the case be forfeited to the Federal Government.

The court equally directed the former minister to refund the outstanding balance of the ₦22 billion reportedly traced to the Zungeru and Mambilla hydroelectric power projects.

The development has continued to generate reactions within political and public circles, especially following reports linking the former minister to preparations for the 2027 political season.

Fresh Anxiety Emerges As Xenophobic Tensions Rise In South Africa

Fresh concerns are emerging across South Africa following renewed anti-foreigner protests and growing xenophobic tensions in parts of the country.

Reports circulating online indicate that some anti-immigration groups have allegedly shared messages calling on foreign nationals to leave South Africa, with June 30, 2026, reportedly mentioned in some of the warnings.

However, there has been no official directive from the South African government ordering foreigners to leave the country.

The development has nevertheless created fear and uncertainty among several foreign communities living across different regions, as concerns over possible harassment and attacks continue to spread.

In recent weeks, protests have reportedly taken place in areas including Johannesburg and Pretoria, where demonstrators accused undocumented migrants of contributing to unemployment, rising crime, and economic hardship.

Several African countries, including Nigeria and Ghana, have reportedly advised their citizens residing in South Africa to remain vigilant and avoid unsafe areas as tensions continue to grow.

South African authorities have condemned acts of violence and intimidation, insisting that while peaceful protest remains a constitutional right, xenophobic attacks and threats against foreign nationals would not be tolerated.

Security agencies are also said to be closely monitoring the situation to prevent any breakdown of law and order, while community leaders and observers continue to call for calm.

Fresh Police Directive Targets POS Operators Around Stations Nationwide

The Nigeria Police Force has ordered Point of Sale (POS) operators across the country to stay at least 200 metres away from police stations and formations over allegations linked to extortion and corrupt practices.

The directive was reportedly issued through an internal wireless message from the Inspector-General of Police and circulated to police commands nationwide.

According to the police authorities, concerns have continued to grow over the increasing presence of POS operators around police facilities and allegations connecting some operators to corrupt dealings involving security personnel.

The police hierarchy reportedly stated that the development was undermining ongoing reform efforts aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and professionalism within the force.

In the communication, the police expressed “utmost dismay” over what it described as the alarming rate at which POS operators conduct transactions around police formations.

The directive further alleged that several complaints had linked some operators to corrupt practices and extortion activities around police stations and checkpoints.

As part of the new order, the force directed that no POS operator should be allowed to operate within a 200-metre radius of any police formation across Nigeria.

Senior police officers, including Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police, were also warned that they could be held responsible for violations occurring within their jurisdictions.

The directive additionally instructed commanders and heads of formations to monitor compliance and ensure strict enforcement nationwide.

The development is believed to be connected to longstanding public complaints alleging that some security personnel use nearby POS operators to facilitate extortion and receive cash transfers from civilians during encounters at checkpoints and police facilities.

In recent years, several Nigerians have accused some officers of directing victims of alleged extortion to make transfers or withdraw cash through POS agents stationed close to police formations.

Human rights advocates and anti-corruption groups have repeatedly raised concerns over the trend, warning that the practice contributes to abuse of power and weakens public trust in law enforcement institutions.

NDC-CAN Responds To Atiku’s Comments On Nigeria’s Security Crisis

The NDC Coalition Alliance Network has criticised recent remarks made by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar concerning Nigeria’s worsening insecurity, accusing him of presenting what it described as a selective account of the country’s security history.

In a statement signed by its National Co-Chairman, Zakari Burra, the coalition acknowledged the seriousness of the nation’s security challenges but argued that conversations surrounding the issue should reflect broader historical realities rather than selective political narratives.

The reaction followed comments reportedly made by Atiku after the death of a former lawmaker who allegedly died while in captivity.

According to the coalition, Nigeria’s insecurity evolved over several decades through a combination of institutional weaknesses, governance failures, and emerging threats under different administrations.

The group argued that it was misleading for political figures to criticise present security conditions without acknowledging the roots of the crisis during periods when they occupied key positions in government.

The statement noted that Atiku served as Vice President between 1999 and 2007, a period the coalition claimed witnessed the emergence of insurgency threats in the North-East alongside communal violence, armed robbery, and intelligence coordination challenges.

According to the statement, no single administration should bear sole responsibility for the country’s security situation, insisting that public commentary should reflect continuity of responsibility rather than what it described as selective memory.

The coalition further argued that former leaders who once held influential government positions should not completely distance themselves from the foundations of current national challenges while criticising ongoing efforts.

It also raised concerns over internal democracy within opposition political structures allegedly linked to Atiku over the years, particularly within the Peoples Democratic Party.

According to the group, a healthy democratic system requires transparent party primaries, equal opportunities for aspirants, and inclusive leadership structures rather than politics built around individuals.

The coalition warned that without such principles, criticism directed at government actions could appear politically motivated rather than issue-based.

It subsequently called on political leaders across party lines to prioritise constructive engagement and policy-driven solutions instead of blame politics.

“Nigeria’s security crisis requires cooperation, not hostility,” the statement added, stressing that constructive opposition should be rooted in honesty, historical awareness, and practical alternatives.

The NDC Coalition Alliance Network also reaffirmed its commitment to democratic accountability, national stability, and inclusive political participation, insisting that the country’s future depends on shared responsibility and sincere leadership engagement.
