Ganduje’s Ally Misled Public on Alleged $6.6M Loan, Debt Office Fires Back

The Kano State Public Debt Management Office has debunked claims made by the APC Patriotic Volunteers Group alleging that the State Government under the NNPP administration secured a fresh $6.6 million external loan.

In a statement signed by Dr. Hamisu Sadi Ali, Director General of the Debt Office, the report published by Daily Nigerian on Wednesday, 11th June 2025 was described as “malicious, baseless and politically inclined.”

The statement pointedly criticized Usman Alhaji, the group’s leader and former Secretary to the State Government under Governor Ganduje, for either “ignorance or willful political mischief.” Dr. Ali noted that Alhaji was a key player when the law establishing the Debt Office was signed in 2021, and should therefore understand that no loan can be contracted without passing through the due process laid out in that legislation.

“Let us educate and remind him about Section 4(b) of the Kano State Public Debt Management Office Law 2021, which clearly states that the Office shall ‘borrow on behalf of the Government, from any individual or institutional bodies.’

Dr. Ali clarified that since the inception of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration, no fresh external or domestic loan has been signed or contracted. Instead, the government has focused on servicing heavy debts inherited from the previous administration.

“We challenge them to provide evidence

1. Name of creditor

2. Loan agreement

3. Purpose

4. Amortization schedule

5. Negotiation records  if any new loan truly exists,” the DG said.

He further emphasized that the public is now more discerning and would not fall for politically motivated distractions, urging citizens to ignore the allegations and continue supporting the administration’s efforts to deliver democratic dividends.

“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains committed to focused leadership and won’t be distracted by falsehoods and propaganda,” the statement concluded.
