Adeyanju Calls For Arrest Of Sheikh Gumi Over Remarks On Banditry

Human rights lawyer and activist, Deji Adeyanju, has called on the Federal Government and security agencies to arrest Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, over comments he allegedly made concerning banditry and Fulani herders in Nigeria.

Adeyanju made the call following the circulation of a viral video in which the cleric reportedly stated that Fulani herdsmen “are not going anywhere” and remain part of the Nigerian society, urging citizens to learn to coexist with them.

Reacting through a post shared on his Facebook page, the activist argued that individuals perceived to be sympathising with terrorists or criminal groups should also be treated as threats to national security.

According to him, comments capable of justifying or defending criminal activities could further worsen the country’s security challenges if left unchecked.

Adeyanju maintained that such statements only thrive in societies where there is weak governance and poor accountability, insisting that security agencies must take decisive action.

He further described the remarks attributed to the cleric as dangerous, warning that they could embolden criminal elements operating across parts of the country.

The activist added that arresting individuals accused of promoting or defending criminal groups would serve as a deterrent and reinforce the government’s commitment to tackling insecurity.
